Bainbridge manufacturer to build part for Boeing
BAINBRIDGE – Earlier this month, Boeing, a leading aircraft manufacturer, debuted their newest airplane, the 787 Dreamliner, and one Chenango County company will be playing a role in building it.
Upturn Industries, a Bainbridge-based business, will be making pieces for the plane’s oxygen system. Upturn Industries will build the part for their client Carleton Technologies, who will build the oxygen system.
Plant Manager Mike Horoszewski seemed surprised at the number of calls he received as a result of the announcement. He explained that Upturn has made a number of parts through Carleton Technologies that were used on other Boeing aircrafts. The part they will be making for the 787 is almost the same part.
“We’ve been making similar parts for our customer Carleton for almost 20 years,” Horoszewski said.
The plant manager attributed the enhanced interest to the popularity of the plane.
In a press release, Boeing described the 787 Dreamliner as a “technologically advanced and environmentally progressive” air craft. “The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the world’s first composite commercial airplane, will use 20 percent less fuel per passenger than similarly sized airplanes, produce fewer carbon emissions, and will have quieter takeoffs and landings,” the press release states.
“At Upturn Industries, we do 1000s of parts for all kinds of aircrafts,” Horoszewski said. “This is almost the same part we’ve made for other Boeing aircrafts. It’s just a little shorter.”
Upturn has not yet begun work on the part for the 787. “We’re not sure exactly when we will begin production,” Horoszewski explained. So far, Boeing has received more than 667 orders for the airplane, with a total value of $110,000 at list price.
The plant manager was not sure how many of the parts Upturn Industries would be contracted to produce, but thought it would be a relatively low quantity.
“This is just one of many, many parts we build for Carleton,” Horoszewski said. The plant manager did not comment on how much money the Upturn would receive for producing the part.
