Bar Association reaches out to aspiring lawyers
NORWICH– With the price of college increasing year to year individuals studying law may have the oppurtunity to gain scholarships to ease some of the burden.
The Chenango County Bar Association has announced it is now accepting applications for its new law school scholarship.
At Chenango County Law Day, the group declared for the first time it will be helping to encourage local residents to finish law school by offering a financial incentive. All residents in the county are eligible, and the program applies to any law student who has completed at least one year of law school.
“The Bar recognizes its professional obligation to the community by offering this fund to college students that have a desire to become an attorney and that are admitted to a law school. So we established this scholarship as a way to provide financial assistance to those local college students,” said Bar Scholarship Committee member, James G. Cushman.
“He (Cushman) was the one that really should get the credit for starting the program,” said Bar Association President Claudette Newman.
The fund allows up to $1,000 per person who is approved for the grant. As many individuals will be assigned grants until the financial pool runs out.
The money being donated was raised by the dues collected from the 65 current members of the Bar association
“The Bar Association is a professional and social organization that includes primarily attorney’s that work mainly in Chenango County,” said Newman. In order to become a member one must have a degree to practice law.
The bar also sponsors the mock trial competitions at local schools. At the last Law Day, the bar presented a plaque to the final team. They also help to select the winner of the distinguished Liberty Bell award.
If you would like to apply for the scholarship, send a letter of interest and a transcript from the past academic year to Roger Monaco, Esq., at PO Box 391, Oxford, NY, 13830. If you have question you can contact Monaco at 843-2951. All submissions should be received by August 3, 2007.
