Republicans file for September primaries

CHENANGO COUNTY – Races for highway superintendent in three towns so far highlight this fall’s Chenango County Republican Party primaries, slated for Sept. 18.
In Columbus, incumbent highway Superintendent Ricky E. Davis will be challenged by Kevin D. Cross. In Coventry, Larry A. Hatton has filed a petition to run against incumbent Keith E. Ives for the department’s top job. And in Preston, Superintendent Charles K. Stein, Sr. will be challenged by Glenn W. Degear.
Republican Carla D. Brown filed for the clerk’s position in the Town of Greene. Incumbent candidate Republican Deborah L. Thomas, who has held the position since 2000, defeated Brown two years ago.
Two council seats are up for grabs in the Town of Sherburne. Incumbent Glen S. Bagnall will be challenged by Edwin T. Meyer. John N. Roberts will race against incumbent candidate Stephen J. Perrin.
In Greene, two Republicans have thrown their hats in for one, 2 year-term council vacancy: Christopher C. Lyons and Joshua P. Browning.
Chenango County Sheriff Thomas Loughren filed both a Conservative Party and a Republican Party petition to seek re-election to a fourth term.
District Attorney Joseph A. McBride filed a Republican Party petition to seek re-election to another four-year term. He was elected to the position in 2003.
All 23 county supervisors are up for election this year. Incumbent Republican Supervisors who filed are: Robert D. Briggs, Afton; Janice A. O’Shea, Coventry; Jack T. Cook, Greene; Alton B. Doyle, Guilford; Richard B. Decker, North Norwich; David C. Law, Norwich; Lawrence N. Wilcox, Oxford; Jerry L. Kreiner, Plymouth; Harry W. Conley, Sherburne; and Allan I. Johnson, Smithville.
Town of Columbus Supervisor George G. Coates filed an Independence Party petition. Republicans filed candidates for all offices except the supervisor spot in Smyrna, held by Democrat James J. Bays, and in New Berlin, held by Ross P. Iannello, unaffiliated.
Caucuses are held in German, Lincklaen, Otselic, Pharsalia and Pitcher.
