Sherburne PD gets boost with new technology
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne Police Department recently received three grants that will allow them to purchase new equipment and become a safer and more efficient department.
“We need to give Senator Seward’s office a lot of credit for helping us to receive these grants,” said Village of Sherburne Mayor William Acee.
The three separate grants will allow for many improvements throughout the department. Thanks to one grant, police department will soon see a new computer system that will allow them to file tickets on-line with the New York State Department of Justice.
“It will make us paper-less as far as tickets are concerned by electronically submitting the information to the DOJ,” Acee said. The new computer equipment will mean less time is spent filling out and filing the paperwork that tickets create, freeing up officers’ time for other things.
A second grant will reimburse the Village of Sherburne for the money spent on bullet-proof vests for the department. “It will make our department safer in today’s environment,” Acee said. Although the Village has not seen an increased need for the vests in their area, the recent increase of shootings involving state troopers and police officers throughout New York State has raised some concerns. “It’s a more dangerous environment than it has ever been,” the Mayor said. He explained that in 1994, the village purchased some bulletproof vests and many people wondered why, but now residents don’t seem to give it a second thought.
“We have had no kinds of incidents in Sherburne, but statewide there are more and more instances when the vests were needed, and you never know,” Acee said.
A third grant for the among of $20,000 will allow the Sherburne Police Department to add another police cruiser to their line-up.
“A little bit of money goes a long way in a small village,” Acee said.
