Local used car dealer shuts down
NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of complaints filed in the last few days concerning the possible delinquency of a local used car dealer and garage.
With only two days’ notice, Pine Valley Auto, 6258 County Road 32, in the Town of Norwich, closed its doors over the weekend. One of the owners, Julie Squires, said the business was permanently closed.
Friday evening, Sheriff’s Lieutenant James E. Lloyd said, “Today we’ve received a number of people coming into our office and filing official complaints. We are not conducting a criminal investigation at this time, but are in the process of gathering information from various financial institutions.” Complaints apparently centered around buyers being unable to secure a clear title to vehicles recently purchased from Pine Valley.
The police will be continuing to gather information later today and have scheduled interviews with the owners of the business, Donald Newell and Squires, although police said the responsibility of ownership may be in dispute. Police also said they hoped to have enough information later today to decide to either escalate or conclude their role in the investigation.
The two owners are reportedly in the process of a divorce and were trying to keep their arrangement from interfering in the business’ activities; however, the situation became contentious, resulting in the immediate and unplanned closure. Both owners have hired divorce lawyers and neither side when contacted had any comment.
Sunday afternoon, several trucks arrived at the establishment and began hauling away the used cars in the business’ lot.
