Fire threatens Norwich row houses
NORWICH – A fire ripped through a home located on a block connecting three others Saturday evening, causing damage to another home and forcing families from all four to evacuate overnight.
The Norwich Fire Department responded to a plume of smoke emanating from the north side of the City of Norwich. A fire broke out in the basement of 4 Lee Ave., one of four row houses located along Lee Avenue and Berry Street.
“This was a very dangerous scenario. The close proximity and the age of these hundred-year-plus homes makes them unpredictable and the situation could have easily gotten out of hand if it wasn’t for the quick response time from our emergency crews,” said Acting Fire Chief Joseph Angelino.
The Norwich FD arrived at the scene to find the structure burning in the basement and walls of the home. With assistance from the Oxford and the North Norwich fire crews, the blaze was brought under quick control, said Angelino.
“The first truck at the scene did a great job containing and knocking down the fire,” said Angelino.
The residence at 4 Lee Ave. suffered “heavy fire damage,” and its neighbor, 6 Lee Ave. suffered heavy smoke damage. The two other homes connected to the row, 8 Lee Ave. and 1 Berry, were also evacuated following the fire because of a strong smoke smell throughout the homes. Ten residents were displaced and forced to find alternative lodging.
The Norwich Fire Department and the Chenango Bureau of Fire are conducting an investigation into the cause of the fire and classified it as electrical. No one was injured during the incident.
