Oxford Historical Society’s annual band concert & ice cream social Thursday
OXFORD – The Oxford Community Band’s Summer Concert Series will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Oxford Historical Society’s (OHS) Depot-Museum. All are welcome to share in this wonderful social event of the season. There will be music, ice-cream, a flag presentation, a Blackhawk’s Memorabilia Exhibit, and an exciting fund raising raffle drawing.
The Oxford Community Band will set up outdoors, under the overhang of the authentic D. L. & W. railroad depot (built circa 1920) at 1 Depot Street. OHS President, Fred Lanfear anticipates being host to over 100 community members in attendance for this pleasurable hour of music. This summer, the band is under the direction of Francis Wilcox, with guest conducting by Justin Hubman. They will play moderate grade marches, show tunes, overtures and novelty selections for the enjoyment of the Oxford community. As is the tradition with this summer performance, it will be accompanied by delicious ice-cream, sold at the olde fashioned price of five cents a bowl. Visiting Oxford Band alumni are encouraged to make themselves known to the band or bring an instrument and sit in. As always, the performance is FREE of charge.
Prior to the performance, there will be a special presentation made by Patricia C. Marso, member of the National Legislative Council of the American Legion, on behalf of Congressman Michael Arcuri. The presentation is of an American flag that once flew over the U. S. Capitol.
The History Museum’s doors will be open with an “Oxford Academy School Memorabilia Exhibit.” Featured will be a display of vintage pennants and pictures, and everybody’s favorite-- a table full of old Oxford Blackhawk yearbooks!
Also, the Museum will be selling fund raising raffle tickets, at $2 each, for a chance to win a rare antique book, “Souvenir of Oxford, NY.” This “Photo-Gravure” collection of souvenir images has a copyright of 1893 by Mrs. A. L. Scott of Oxford, NY; published by the Albertype Co., of Brooklyn, NY. This exciting drawing will be held at the end of the concert the same night.
