Uptown II restaurant opens downtown

NORWICH – Opening his own restaurant is all Daniel Parker says he has ever wanted to do, and at age 22 it’s a goal he has been able to achieve with the grand opening of the Uptown II.
On Aug. 1, the Uptown II opened for the first time. The business, located next to Townsend’s Variety on Broad Street on the ground floor of the former Morrisville building, offers a full menu of breakfast, lunch and dinner choices, with breakfast available all day.
“My parents owned the Uptown when I was a kid, and it was the best experience I ever had,” Parker said. “As long as I can remember, that’s all I wanted to do.”
The original Uptown Restaurant closed its doors approximately eight years ago, when Parker was 14. When he was old enough he began working at different area restaurants, including Burger King, where he served as a manager for many years.
“I worked at Burger King as a manager for years, but fast food just wasn’t my scene. I wanted to open my own restaurant,” Parker said.
The opportunity presented itself when the restaurant location became available. “Everything just fell in to place. It wasn’t hard to get started,” Parker said.
The Uptown II is family owned and operated, with all of the employees related in some way to Parker. He and his father Lynn Manwarren are the cooks. The wait staff consists of Parker’s sisters and cousins and his brother works as the dishwasher.
Parker said he has worked at a number of local restaurants and has learned a little everywhere he went.
Parker says his plan for success is offering an array of homemade food at reasonable prices. The Uptown II offers a 10 percent discount to senior citizens. In addition, Parker hopes he will be able to hold a 1950s night once a month. For that night, the staff will dress in ‘50s style clothing and the food will cost approximately the same amount it did during that time period.
“The food is good and the prices are great,” Parker said.
The Uptown II is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dinner specials are offered daily and take out is available. For more information call the Uptown II at 371-6639.
