Out with the old in with the new: Oxford’s grocery store closes

OXFORD – The tradition of more than a half-century of small town grocery shopping is coming to a close as the Oxford Great American’s liquidation ends tomorrow.
Since the onset of the week, the grocer’s inventory has been marked 50 percent off and the shelves have slowly emptied. In its place, a variety store will soon be doing business.
The new proprietor, Rick Damico, said that by the end of the month, Great American will be completely moved out and then his crews will begin to renovate the deteriorating building. “Basically we are going to gut out the whole store and remodel the inside. We are also going to make improvements to the outside of the building and the grounds around it,” said Damico.
Damico is a developer for Dollar General, which owns his own private firm. He acquires properties and then renovates them to fit the needs of his customer before leasing the property to them.
Dollar General, despite its name, is not actually a true dollar store but rather a variety store, said Damico. “They’ll have some items that have a price point up to 30 or 40 dollars ... some groceries, caned food, a refrigeration section with milk, eggs and the basics,” said Damico. The variety store is also planning on having a selection of easily-stored foods such as pasta, snacks and boxed meals. The store is also going to offer a small clothing selection, cleaning and hygiene products.
“It really is a true five-and-dime from olden times, same sort of idea,” said Damico.
Dollar General expects to hire around five full-time employees and about three part-time. The company currently operates a Dollar General in Sherburne. The corporation is owned by a huge private equity firm based in California, the same company which not too long ago purchased the bankrupt Toys-R-Us corporation. “They have over 8,000 stores nationwide and have been around since the early 1940s,” said Damico.
“We have driven through Oxford a number of times and have been looking for a location. Now we have an ideal spot right in the heart of the village. I’m happy to be there and look forward to becoming part of the local community. We’re going to make it look brand new inside and out,” said Damico.
