SMTS musical revue celebrates all things woman

HAMILTON – While not quite “The Vagina Monologues,” this weekend’s performance by the Sherburne Music Theater Society has a decidedly feminine flair.

“A ... My Name is Alice” is a musical revue with an all-female cast, a series of songs, stories and vignettes all told from the female perspective (though some of the cast members gender-bend in male roles). SMTS will stage the off-Broadway hit at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday at the Palace Theater in Hamilton.

“I think we can all relate to these women in some way,” said Director Donna Moren. “They’re stories told by wives, sisters, friends – even a women’s basketball team ... it’s a great collaboration of songs and monologues.”

Moren said while picking a musical for this summer’s SMTS production, she “fell in love” with the original cast CD for “A ... My Name is Alice.” “I laughed all the way through it,” she said.

Representing the fairer sex are nine actresses ranging in age from 16 to 50-something, and hailing from Sherburne, Earlville, Hamilton, South Otselic and Eaton. Among them is Sherburne’s Maggie Fitzpatrick, admittedly the show’s “mature grand dame.” She plays a series of songstress women in the revue, and insists that while the show of “bawdy and insightful,” there’s “no real deep message that men should be afraid of. Everyone can relate; it’s just about how these women deal with all the different situations they face.”
