Savoy Brown band fills Bluefest headliner slot

NORWICH – Members of the 1960s era British blues-rock band Savoy Brown told Chenango County’s Blues Association members on Saturday that they would cut out time from their vacation in order to fill in for this weekend’s formerly billed headliner, Ike Turner.
Turner canceled last Thursday for medical reasons, his promoters said.
Savoy Brown returns to the 15th annual Chenango Blues Festival on Aug. 18 after performing in the festival’s acoustic tent in 2005. “They told us they had such a great time and were treated so well here that they would be happy to help us out during their vacation,” Blues Festival Hospitality Chairperson Linda Tracey Palmatier said yesterday.
Blues Festival President Eric Larsen said he scrambled between the phone and his computer for about 48 hours in order to come up with a replacement for Turner. “It wasn’t fun, but we are very excited to have Savoy Brown back. People loved them,” he said.
The Chenango Blues Festival kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday with blues bands performing on the Chenango County Courthouse lawn in downtown Norwich. The show continues from noon to 10 p.m. on Saturday at the Chenango County Fairgrounds with Savoy Brown and Rod Piazza, Janiva Magness, Big Sam’s Funky Nation, Geoff Achison, Roy Book Bender, The Wiyos and Eric Lindell. Blues artists will later appear at a post fest party at Howard Johnson’s, 75 N. Broad St., in Norwich.
Savoy Brown was known in England and the U.S. during the 1960s and 1970s for their albums: Shake Down, Getting to the Point, Train to Nowhere, Blue Matter, A Step Further and Raw Sienna. The band regularly backed Johnny Lee Hooker and Cream. Popular singles of the era include: “The Savoy Brown Boogie,” “Louisiana Blues,” and “Walking By Myself.”
Later, band members Roger Earl, Tony Stevens, Kim Simmonds and Lonesome Dave Peverett met up with Rod Price and formed Foghat, famous for such feature hits as “Slow Ride,” “Fool For The City” and “I Just Want To Make Love To You.”
The Savoy Brown of today is based in the U.S. and combines a Chicago blues-styled boogie with British flavored rock and roll. The band features original member and vocalist Kim Simmonds on lead guitar, Mario Staiano on drums and singing back-up vocals and Gerry Sorrentino on bass. They have recorded “Strange Dreams” with Simmond’s own production company and Blind Pig Records.
