Pool sharks head to Vegas
NORWICH – From the bright lights of the Las Vegas strip to the casinos to the shows to the tournaments, members of one local pool playing league will have their chance to shine with the best in the nation as they head to Nevada to compete in a nationwide tournament.
Eight players, including Thomas Fazio Jr., John Richards, Krista Bartle, Robert Bowers, Ronald Kapp, Joseph Sykes, Edward Rickard Jr. and Gail Skorus are on their way to Las Vegas for the American Pool Association’s (APA) National Competition.
Representing American Legion Post #189, this is the second year the team earned the chance to compete.
“Last year, there were 856 teams and we placed 149th. This year, we are going for the championship,” said Fazio.
To get the chance to play at nationals, the team first had to place at regionals. The regional competition was held in Utica this year with over 200 teams throughout seven counties. From the 200 initial teams, 24 teams were placed on the “June Board,” and out of the 24, three teams were chosen to fly to Vegas.
Nationals will be held at the Riviera Hotel and Casino from Aug. 20-25. The APA covers the teams lodging and airfare for the competition. The local legion team plays eight ball together Thursdays and nine ball on Sundays.
Along with earning the chance to compete in nationals again, the team of eight also was awarded the APA five star Good Sportsmanship award this year.
“We have been blessed with a great team, and if there is any team in Chenango County that can win, it’s this one,” said Fazio.
