Storm closes roads, knocks out power
CHENANGO COUNTY – A powerful storm blew through Chenango County Thursday night, beginning around 6 p.m. With thunder, lightning, wind and hail, the storm brought down trees and power lines leaving some county residents without power.
According to Emergency Management Officer A. Wesley Jones, the majority of the storm’s damage was located between Norwich and Oxford.
“We had trees down, tree limbs and power lines in the roads,” he said. A portion of county Rt. 32 – from just south of Norwich to the Halfway House – area was closed for a short period of time to allow workers to remove debris from the road.
Norwich Police and Fire Chief Joseph Angelino said state Rt. 12 in Norwich was also closed for a short period of time due to an obstruction.
“Norwich emergency crews from the fire and police departments were busy responding to several calls during yesterday’s storms,” he said. “Crews attended to down wires and debris closing roads or monitoring traffic where ever needed.” According to the Chief, despite the road closings, no serious incident occurred inside the city and no one was injured.
