Several notorious cases before Chenango Court today

NORWICH – Today in County Court, a number of high-profile cases will be heard, including two homicides.

• George Ford Jr., 42, of Piscataway, N.J., was charged with second degree murder after he allegedly struck Shyanne A. Somers, 12, Route 26, South Otselic, with his Ford extended cab pick-up truck, causing severe trauma and massive internal injuries resulting in her instant death.
He will be appearing today at 11:30 a.m. at the County Courthouse.
Ford originally said the accident took place July 8 at around midnight, but the victim wasn’t transported to the hospital until five hours later. Police later uncovered a hidden GPS device in Ford’s truck, placed there by his wife over a suspicion he was cheating. The device contradicted Ford’s statement, revealing he spent over three hours behind an abandoned house on the night of the incident. Ford tested positive for cocaine use; police also detected .01 percent alcohol in his blood stream five hours after the alleged incident took place and found a bag of marijuana in his truck.
Ford is expected to plead not guilty to second degree murder and the prosecution will attempt to raise the $100,000 bail he is currently being held on.

• Jason Sherman, 24, McDonough, is charged with two counts of first degree manslaughter and second degree assault. Sherman has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
He will be appearing today at 1:15 for pretrial hearings.
Police allege Sherman caused the intentional death of his girlfriend’s 16-month-old infant by striking the child. The DA claims the defendant was attempting to silence the baby or discipline it, but those reports have not been confirmed. The infant showed signs of prior abuse, including a broken arm. The mother is still in a relationship with Sherman, and the defense says she considers the matter an unfortunate accident. The couple still reside together. The case took months to process, and much of the evidence is forensic or medical.
Sherman is currently being held on $500,000 bail at the County Jail.

• Jonathan “Joe” Elwood, 29, Ashcraft Road, Norwich, has been charged with predatory sexual assault (Class A-II felony), first degree burglary (Class B felony), first degree rape (Class B felony), first degree robbery (Class B felony), first degree criminal sexual act (Class B felony), first degree criminal use of a firearm (Class B felony) and petit larceny.
He will be appearing today at 11:30 a.m.
Allegedly Elwood and another broke into a home at around 11:30 p.m. armed with a gun and attacked a 58 year-old-woman inside, striking her in the head and face repeatedly. Allegedly their original plan was only to include robbery and assault, but once in the process of those crimes, they decided to forcibly rape and beat the woman, threatening to kill her. The two men left the scene after being at the home “for a considerable amount of time,” said police. They were at-large for nearly four months before DNA evidence led to their arrest.
The two defendants have been unable to work out a plea bargain and are heading to trial later this year.
