City gives awards for years of service

NORWICH – City employees filled the seats of the Norwich City Court Tuesday night during the Common Council meeting. The council honored loyal employees for years of service and dedication to Norwich.
Awards were presented to Police and Fire Chief Joseph Angelino, who has served the city for 26 years; Thomas Page, for his more than 30 years of service at the Department of Public Works; Robert Page, who also had over 30 years of service at the DPW; Tim Christophersen, for 32 years at the Fire Department and Gary Cate, for 39 years at the Fire Department.
“These service certificates are being presented to the very loyal employees of the City of Norwich, who have been with us for 25 years or longer,” Mayor Joseph Maiurano said. “In 25 years, they’ve seen a lot of administrations come and go, and they’ve been loyal to all of those administrations.”
Following the awards, the council moved on to police business. A resolution was passed authorizing the promotion of Police Officer Gard Turner to the rank of Sergeant. The retirement of former Assistant Police Chief Van Miles created an opening in the department. Former Sergeant Rodney Marsh filled the position of Assistant Chief, and Turner will fill the position Marsh vacated as Sergeant, leaving an opening for a patrolman in the department.
“The rank of Sergeant in the police department is very important. As you’ve seen over the past year, the police chief can not be there, and the department still runs smoothly,” Angelino said.
The council passed another resolution to appoint former Assistant Police Chief Murray Roach to the position of Ordinance Inspection Officer. The Ordinance Inspection Officer position will be a part-time position in the Code Enforcement Office. The 36-hour per week Ordinance Inspection Officer will be responsible for monitoring local code violations, such as garbage, unregistered vehicles, un-mowed grass and typical local ordinance laws.
The council also passed a motion to re-appoint Stephen R. Harris of Sherburne to another six-year term as the city assessor, ending in 2013.
