Sheriff gets more nursing coverage at jail
NORWICH - A lack of candidates applying for and sticking to part-time nursing jobs at the Chenango County Public Safety Facility has resulted in county leaders increasing the hours of two open positions.
All but Town of Preston Supervisor Peter C. Flanagan voted at the Board of Supervisors meeting last week to increase the two part-time jobs from 19 hours to 29 hours per week with benefits.
Sheriff Thomas J. Loughren has repeatedly pushed for more medical coverage at the new jail during committee meetings all this month. He said staffing is currently deficient and finding nurses to work part-time without benefits has been difficult.
“We need full coverage. We are playing Russian roulette without it,” Loughren said.
Chenango County Personnel Department Director Bonnie Carrier said Loughren has had difficulty filling nursing positions because “not all nurses want to work with that type of clientele. Benefits might help.”
After pulling the resolution for further discussion, Flanagan said, “Why not consolidate (the two part-time jobs) into one full-time. To me, they become full-time when we go over the 19 hours and give them benefits. They might as well be full-time.”
Personnel Committee Chairman Wayne C. Outwater, R-Lincklaen, said while the change would take affect immediately, the matter could be discussed again later this year during 2008 budget deliberations. “We will talk about it and take Pete’s suggestion into consideration,” Outwater said.
The Sheriff currently has two full-time RN positions, one part-time RN and one part-time LPN. Of the four slots, only two are presently filled.
The part-time positions pay $16.90 per hour. Fringe benefits for the upgraded position would amount to an extra $7,000 to $8,000 per year.
