Sheriff's Dept. to crack down on driver distractions this week
CHENANGO – This week, police will be focusing their efforts on taking action against driver distractions.
Officers will be paying close attention to what motorists are doing behind the wheel and will be aggressively enforcing the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws prohibiting the use of cell phones while driving.
“If you are driving and speaking on your cell phone, the odds of you being involved in an accident are four times greater than if you were not using the cell phone,” said Sheriff Thomas Loughren.
The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office, along with several other agencies, will be stepping up their efforts this week in a statewide program designed to reduce the number of driver distracted accidents and create public awareness. The program began Sunday and will conclude Friday.
“Due to lack of experience, those risks are only amplified even further for drivers less than 20 years of age,” said Loughren.
Law enforcement agencies reported there are over six million vehicle accidents annually that are a result of driver distractions.
“Through education and enforcement, we are hoping to raise awareness on the huge responsibility that drivers share,” said the Sheriff.
Police reported that during a 2006 study, nearly 80 percent of accidents occurred within three seconds of a reported distraction.
“We may never fully understand how many crashes are avoided because of efforts like this program due to the fact you cannot measure deterrence. However, we cannot underestimate it as well. Driving is a full-time job and we must treat it as such. This is just part of law enforcement’s continuing efforts to make our roadways safe,” said Loughren.
