Partners in crime separated by a guilty plea

NORWICH – A woman who was accused of multiple burglaries in Chenango and Broome counties pleaded guilty in court Monday.
Liza Benjamin, 22, pleaded guilty to one count of second degree burglary, a class C felony. Originally she was charged with three counts of second degree burglary and one count of petit larceny. She will be sentenced Sept. 14, facing between three and a half to 15 years in state prison. In court, her attorney, Joseph Cawley, said an agreement between the prosecution and defense had indicated that the District Attorney would recommend a minimal sentence.
“These defendants are charged with a series of burglaries in Chenango County and in the plea today the defendant accepted a C felony and agreed to pay back the restitution. All the crimes were motivated over drugs and if it wasn’t for the lack of previous dealings with the law, she would be going away for much longer,” said District Attorney Joseph McBride.
Benjamin’s co-defendant, Brockton E. Jones, 25, Broome County, is charged with six counts of second degree burglary (class C felony) and six counts of petit larceny. Jones is at the county jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail and will be appearing in court Sept. 7. Jones has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
The two were arrested for a string of home invasions in Broome County as well.
The duo is accused of entering several private residences and stealing a variety of possessions and cash. Some of the things they allegedly stole were a $750 Berretta handgun, a global positioning device, jewelry, rolled coins and change jars.
All the burglaries that took place in Chenango County happened in the Town of Greene and the Town of Smithville.
Benjamin could face life in prison if convicted of all the charges, said McBride.
