'Weekend warriors' bring home trophies
NORWICH – A local group of mixed martial artists, consisting of young professionals, attended a tournament at Ithaca College recently and brought home three place-winning trophies.
Team “Choke Him Out,” based in Norwich, brought seven of its regular members to the Jujitsu submission tournament and captured two first-place positions and one third.
Jeff Newton and Fran Loiselle both earned first place while Reuben Roach took third place in their divisions. The event drew over 200 competitors, including professional fighters.
“The tournament was very large and had UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) competitors in it. Our local gym had a great showing and made great contacts through the MMA (mixed martial arts) community. In all we had seven competitors in team ‘Choke Him Out’ from Chenango County participate,” said Roach.
The team has about eight core members who are mostly young professionals with backgrounds in either wrestling or martial arts. The member’s occupations range greatly and includes police officers, family court and bank employees.
Roach, who is a Norwich Police Officer, says he and many of the others participate because, “We want to test and prove our skills. I look for the challenges in life.”
The group practices two or three times a week and many of the members adhere to a strict code of health, such as diet and exercise, in order to successfully compete in their weight-based divisions. “The week before this competition everyone wants to make weight but still be able to fight three or four matches in a single day. We eat healthy and intensify our cardio leading up to the tournaments,” said Roach.

“Our facility is pretty Spartan, not glamorous at all, a wrestling mat, some equipment and a lot of sweat,” said Roach.
