CHENANGO COUNTY – The New York State Department of Education has released lists of high performing schools and districts that are showing rapid improvement, and several Chenango County area schools have made the list.
Information provided by the Department of Education states “High performing schools and districts have been recognized because during the 2005-06 school year, they met all applicable standards for English and math and also made adequate yearly progress in English and math for two consecutive years.”
A record number of New York schools made the list for high performing schools and districts. Of all the eligible schools and districts in New York, 48 percent of schools and 42 percent of districts made the list. Schools in the Chenango County area include Greene Central School District, Intermediate and Middle School, Afton Elementary School, Bainbridge-Guilford Central School District and Elementary School, Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Central School District and Elementary School and Sherburne-Earlville Elementary.
A second list showed schools and districts that had shown rapid improvement for the 2005-2006 school year. Six percent of eligible schools and four percent of eligible districts were recognized for improvement. “Rapidly improving schools and districts are those that were below the state standards in one or more subjects but showed improvement and made adequate yearly progress,” according to the Department of Education.
Local schools on the list include Bainbridge-Guilford High School, South Otselic Central School District and Elementary School, and the Gilbertsville-Mount Upton Junior-Senior High School.
“The percentage of schools and districts showing improvement and helping to close the achievement gap has greatly increased since last year,” State Education Commissioner Richard Mills said in a press release. “This record number of schools is a positive sign and steels us for the work ahead.”
