Daniel Brown to appear in court tomorrow

NORWICH – A man accused of commiting a murder in the City of Norwich is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday.
Daniel L. Brown Sr. will appear at the Chenango County Courthouse before acting Chenango County Court Judge Martin E. Smith of Broome tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.
Brown is being represented by John D. Cameron of the Chenango County Public Defender’s Office and is currently being held in the Chenango County Correctional Facility without bail.
Brown, 45, was arrested in March by the Norwich Police department following a three-day search that ended in the discovery of the body of Tammy L. Periard, who was reported as missing by her mother.
The Chenango County grand jury indicted Brown on two counts of first degree murder, one count of second degree murder, one count of first degree rape, two counts of first degree robbery and one count of first degree assault. Brown is accused of killing Periard, the manager of his Henry Street apartment, where her body was discovered.
Following a strange phone call to the Norwich PD from the Chenango Memorial Hospital, officers were dispatched to area around the hospital in an effort to locate the suspect. A short time later, police discovered and identified Brown as the culprit of the phone call and arrested him. A warrant to search his apartment was obtained. Brown then allegedly confessed to some aspects of the murder following his request for a lawyer. Police discovered the body of the victim in his apartment a short time later and uncovered a stick in the backyard that Brown allegedly described as the murder weapon.
Administrative Judge Judith O’Shea of the 6th Judicial District appointed Broome County Court Judge Martin E. Smith to preside over the case after county court Judge Howard Sullivan recused himself. Smith has been asked to step in twice in the past year for two other murder cases, in which the judges recused themselves. He presided over the retrial murder case of Tammi Van Deusen and is currently presiding over the Peter M. Wlasiuk retrial.
Brown faces the possibility of life without parole if convicted.
