M-E wins rematch with S-E; Oxford rolls to first win

Morrisville-Eaton 5, Sherburne-Earlville 1
SHERBURNE — Sherburne-Earlville’s first-half lead crumbled in a hurry in an early-season battle between last year’s top two teams in the Center State Conference.
Morrisville-Eaton scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to erase the Marauders’ one-goal lead. Chelsea Verne had two of her three goals, and Amanda Smith tacked on the third goal at 20:14, less than two minutes after Verne gave her club its first lead of the game. “We stopped doing things I assumed we would do well,” said S-E coach Sheila Cooman of the second half. “We stopped moving to the ball and stopped playing as a team.”
Karli Harris had the lone goal of the first half to put her team on top. S-E plays Moravia Friday night in the first round of the S-E Tournament.

HANCOCK – Oxford grabbed its first win in three starts this season as it heads into its annual field hockey tournament this weekend.
Christi Baker, Jenna Farwell, and Marlena Frank scored 2 1/2 minutes apart in the final six minutes of the half to pad the Oxford lead to 4-0. “I think this win is exactly what we needed for our confidnence,” said Oxford coach Melissa Chrystie. “We can build on this heading into our tournament.”
Erin Law added two penalty stroke goals in the second half for Oxford (1-2).

Boys’ Soccer

Oxford 4, Walton 1
OXFORD – Oxford came out strong for the second straight game and rolled over Walton Tuesday afternoon.
Scott Seiler scored the first of his two goals at the 32:45 mark, and made it 2-0 at halftime with 15:40 remaining.
Kyle Ferrington beat several defenders for one of his two second-half goals to pad the Blackhawks’ advantage. “We pretty much controlled the tempo of play today,” said Oxford coach Tim Paden. “Our pressure on offense starting wearing on their condition level.”
Oxford (2-1) plays at Unadilla Valley Friday.

SOUTH OTSELIC – Cincinnatus kept Otselic Valley off the board in the second half and went on to beat the Vikings Wednesday afternoon.
David Cerasani scored in the first half for the Vikes. “Cincinnatus is probably the best in our league this year, and for our first outing, it wasn’t too bad,” said OV coach Dave Loomis. “We did have opportunities to score, we just didn’t finish them off.”
OV plays Tully on Friday at the DeRuyter Tournament.

EDMESTON – G-MU dropped to 0-2 in the Tri-Valley league losing a one-goal match to the Panthers Wednesday.
Edmeston reversed a one-goal deficit at halftime getting three straight goals to move in front 4-2. Matt Laymon connected twice, and Dan Turner cashed in on an all-important penalty kick.
Cody Hall had two goals for G-MU (1-2, 0-2). “We played better than the day before (against Morris), but we made some costly mistakes today,” said G-MU coach Mark Luettger.
The Raiders player their third game in as many days today when they host Schenevus.

Owego 7, Norwich 0
NORWICH – Owego bombarded Norwich for 60 shots, yet stellar goalkeeping by Tornado keeper Joe Krug kept his team in the hunt for 45 minutes.
Krug finished with 25 saves and left with the Indians up 3-0. “If Joe doesn’t play hard, we’re probably down 20-0,” said Norwich coach John McCumiskey. “If he doesn’t turn out to be our league’s all-star keeper, I would be very surprised.”
Richard Franz had three goals for Owego and Mike Spadine added a pair of tallies. Owego stepped up its offense in the second half as the Tornado wore down, McCumiskey said.
Norwich hosts Oneonta today.

Windsor 56, Sherburne-Earlville 39
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville picked up four wins and set a new school-record in the 400-yard freestyle relay Wednesday evening against Windsor.
Samantha Martin had two individual wins taking the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle. Martin was also part of the record-breaking relay that included Gemma Fitzpatrick, Alex Yacavone and Monica Jones. The winning quartet timed a 4:44.36, more than 2 1/2 seconds faster than the previous record.

Girls’ Tennis

Norwich 4, Chenango Valley 3
CHENANGO BRIDGE – Norwich won its second straight match and third out of four since an opening loss to Sus Valley Wednesday night at CV.
Norwich first singles player, Haley Runyon, forced a third-set super tiebreaker evening the match in the second set. She won that tiebreaker 10-5 to clinch the Tornado’s win. “She played the other girl’s game the first set,” said Norwich coach John Stewart of Runyon. “She came back out and played her game in the second set, then won the tiebreaker decisively to give us our fourth team point and the match.”
Jen Zieno and Sophie Stewart also won at singles, while Krissie Collier and Christina Decker teamed for a win at first doubles.
The win comes on the heels of a 5-2 victory over Chenango Forks last Thursday. Norwich (3-2) hosts Johnson City Friday.

NEW BERLIN – Oxford picked up a sweep over the Storm Wednesday afternoon in the host club’s first-ever varsity tennis match.
Erica DeWispelaere won a showdown over UV’s Melissa Campbell, 6-3, 7-5. UV head coach, Fred Fazio, said that Campbell is the lone player on her team with previous tennis experience. “I am pleased with the girls’ performances their first time in a match,” Fazio said.
