B-G, Norwich stay unbeaten

B-G 27, Seton Catholic Central 0

BAINBRIDGE – The Bobcats are off to the same type of start as last season, and with the dominating shutout Friday night at home, remain as one of the last two unbeatens among Chenango County clubs.
Dustin Ross displayed his go-the-distance ability on any running attempt scoring TDs of 54 and 31 yards. He racked up 158 yards on the season and is well over 300 yards through two games this season.
Chris McGinnis scored on a four-yard keeper in the second quarter and Travis Dickey hauled in McGinnis’ 48-yard scoring toss in the third quarter, McGinnis’ third touchdown pass of the season. It’s another step forward for the Bobcats’ offense that appears as balanced as it’s been in at least a decade. “That’s what we’re trying to establish (balance),” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “We feel we have pretty good skill kids at receiver, and with the Ross kid and his speed, we want to spread the wealth on offense.”
B-G’s defense showed great improvement over the previous week’s win over UV-Edmeston allowing just 92 total yards, while forcing four turnovers. Seton back Chris Perry was held to 60 yards after rushing for over 200 the previous week. “We knew we had to contain the Perry kid and keep him inside,” Mattingly said. “The defense was just outstanding in shutting him down.”

Norwich 18, Dryden 14

DRYDEN – Norwich is already a step ahead of its 2006 campaign. The Tornado, who did not win two straight games a season ago, improved to 2-0 on the season winning its Section IV division opener.
Nate Foote scored on a five-yard run late in the third quarter to put Norwich ahead for the first time, and a defensive stop of Dryden’s offense in the waning moments of the fourth quarter clinched the victory.
Unlike its opening win over Johnson City when Norwich raced to a 14-point lead in the first five minutes, The Tornado found themselves playing from behind for most of three quarters.
Dale Riley, who caught six passes for Dryden, hauled in a 36-yard TD pass from Doug Bushnell in the first stanza. A successful extra point kick had the Purple Lions ahead.
Chris Mattingly scored the first of his two TD runs in the second quarter, but Bushnell’s TD jaunt later in the stanza had his team in front by eight points (14-6) at the break.
Mattingly, who finished with 153 yards on the ground, pared the margin with a 25-yard scoring saunter; however, the second straight missed conversion left Norwich down by a deuce.
Norwich opens its newly surfaced home field Friday against Greene (1-1).

Newfield 20, UV-Edmeston 6

NEWFIELD – Newfield didn't score on its first offensive play, as B-G did against UV-Edmeston last week. It scored on the third.
Mike Armstrong dashed 59 yards down the left side for the opening tally, he added a 23-yard scoring run in the second period, and finished with 108 yards throwing to lead his team to its second win this season.
"It was a play we were looking for, he just got outside," said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler of the first score. (Armstrong) has to be one of the best ballhandling quarterbacks I've ever seen. But he had 80 yards rushing, and all of them came on those two big runs."
UV-E drove for the tying scoring in the second quarter when, Josh Wright hit Darin Garcia on a 24-yard scoring toss. Two other Storm drives, a 13-play excursion and an 11-play trek, both ended in lost fumbles.
Armstrong's second TD run broke a 6-6 tie in the second quarter, and Mike Kastenhuber tacked on a one-yard TD run after a 57-yard pass from Armstrong to Dillon Schuts.
The Storm (0-2) host Spencer-Van Etten Friday at 7 p.m.

Holland Patent 48, S-E 8

HOLLAND PATENT – A spirited Holland Patent club scored on its first five possessions in the first half, and benefited from five Sherburne-Earlville turnovers to win a Section III Class B division contest Saturday.
Dan Fursella and Cody Crago had a pair of TD runs, while quarterback Jared Keyte threw on TD and ran for another. Holland Patent averaged nearly 10 yards per rushing play in amassing 376 yards of total offense.
"We had a flat week of practice and that is how we played," said S-E coach Mickey James. "They came out intense and they sent waves of running backs in and out to stay fresh."
Two of the Marauders' turnovers thwarted scoring drives, and a third set up a short Holland Patent TD drive in the first half.
Nick Beadle scored for S-E on a 14-yard TD pass from Logan Klockowski. Billy Northey had his second straight 100-yard rushing day finishing with 26 carries for 131 yards.

Harpursville 30, Oxford 26

HARPURSVILLE – Harpursville ended a 20-year span between wins over Oxford pulling off what many would consider an upset Saturday afternoon at home.
Mike DeMarco rushed for 116 yards and one TD, and he answered Oxford’s opening score with a 95-yard kickoff return for six points that put his club immediately in the game. “DeMarco seemed to be the focus of what they were trying to do on offense,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “We knew he was quick, and they were able to get (DeMarco) to the edge almost at will. We didn’t execute on defense, and that is a credit to them.”
Oxford was able to score on its initial drive, just as it did in an opening win over Edison. John Witchella threw a 19-yard TD pass to Kyle Smith.
Following DeMarco’s dash, Travis Frank scored on runs of 60 and two yards in the second quarter, and an 18-8 lead. Harpursville ignited its own confidence entering halftime when, Vinny Catto grabbed Joe Nieto’s 44-yard scoring pass. DeMarco put his club in front on a 38-yard scamper, and Todd Terpstra burst through the Oxford defense for a 57-yard six-pointer.
Oxford’s answer in the fourth quarter was a 12-yard TD reception from Witchella to sophomore Jeremy Nelson. Oxford had possession with two minutes left, but the drive stalled on downs.
“Harpursville is a good team, and that Candor score (44-14) really didn’t show how good they were,” Chrystie said. “They turned it over seven times, and I don’t care how good a team you are, that is too difficult to overcome. If they didn’t turn it over against us -- and they didn’t -- we knew they would be tough. They do a lot of different things that other teams in our division don’t do. With their team speed, they’ll give teams some trouble.”
