Marauders find way to win

SHERBURNE – Worn and weary, pushed around by strong rival, outgained significantly and playing on its heels for most of four quarters and overtime, Sherburne-Earlville second-year coach, Mickey James, had one question to ask: “What does the scoreboard say?”
The scoreboard read: Home-21, Guest-20.
The Marauders, who made up for a bending and sometimes breaking defense by making several big individual plays, summoned one final huge defensive play when its collective gas tanks were nearly on empty to prevail over A-P-W’s Rebels Friday night.
In the second overtime, the visiting Rebels elected to try for a two-point conversion and the win, and that try not only failed, but failed miserably. Matt Kolodzie, who rushed for 138 yards and touchdown to that point, swept around the left end only to find S-E defenders Billy Northey and Tyler Blinebry springing forward for a tackle at the five-yard line to end the game.
In a example of last effort spent and exhaustion settling in, Northey was helped off the field by a pair of teammates holding tightly onto each teammate’s shoulders. “We found a way to win,” James said after the win, set before a near-capacity homecoming weekend crowd. “The biggest difference between this year and last year is that people stepped up and made big plays when we needed them.”
The Marauders’ offense went nowhere most of the game, except when great opportunity knocked. None of its three scoring drives went for more than 22 yards, and 138 total yards in the game was by far its lowest total of the season. By contrast, the Rebels amassed 347 yards of total offense, but was hurt by poor execution in key situations, turnovers at critical times, and ill-timed penalties. Oh, and a few Sherburne-Earlville defenders were quick to jump at the opportunity to shine. “We knew they were a talented team and I thought they played Holland Patent tough for a half,” James said, noting that his team did not play Holland Patent nearly as well last week. “People stepped up today, and this is a great step forward for us.”
After a relatively even first half, the Rebels asserted command in the second half holding the ball nearly 18 of the 24 minutes and allowing S-E just four offensive plays the entire third quarter. One of those plays, though, was enough to put the Marauders up top.
Following a bad punt snap by A-P-W on its first series, the Marauders took over at the opponent’s 22. Northey got outside on the first play and dashed to the corner diving just inside the orange pylon for six points.
A-P-W subsequently marched on a 95-yard tying TD score finished by Kolodzie’s 38-yard scoring jaunt and set up by QB Brandon Burrows’ 28-yard completion on third down to Mike Phillips.
Looking to ride the sweeping tide of momentum, A-P-W forced a punt and took over at its own 20. Enter another play-making episode for the Marauders. On third down, S-E defenders Chris Pike and Nick Beadle sacked Burrows forcing an fumble that was recovered by the Marauders’ Garin Thornton. Three plays later, the Marauders capitalized when Phil Price hauled in an 18-yard scoring toss from Logan Klockowski.
S-E had possession just 2:33 the remainder of the game, and A-P-W dented and dinged a reeling Marauders defense. Paul Willcox scored on a seven-yard TD run with 3:13 left, and Kolodzie’s two-point run tied the game at 14-14. On the ensuing kickoff, Mike Lembo of A-P-W recovered an onside kick giving his team an opportunity to score the winning points. After eight plays and just one first down, a last-second pass by Burrows was knocked down forcing overtime.
Each club turned the ball over on its first play in overtime, and S-E had first crack in the second extra session. On a third-and-one, Wheeler Brunschmid bounced off an initial hit at the line of scrimmage, and dashed outside to the right for an 11-yard TD run. Logan Aikins connected on the point-after kick for a 21-14 lead.
A-P-W moved for its score in just four plays, the last a four-yard run from Willcox. “That last touchdown was a play we drew up at halftime,” James said afterward.
The Marauders (2-1) travel to Clinton next weekend.
Defensive Notes: The Marauders three fumbles, intercepted one pass, and recovered a muffed punt. Thornton had two sacks, one fumble recovery, and he also recovered a mishandled punt. Dustin Brooks recovered a fumble as did Daryn Delee. Aikins had interception in the second quarter inside S-E’s 20 to stop a touchdown drive, and Andrew Dobson was credited with a sack.
