Memorial flag donation
NORWICH – American Legion Post 189 in Norwich has been given a burial flag of a deceased WWII veteran Emory P. Barkley. His sister Bernie Finch is donating her brother’s flag to the American Legion Post. Emory P. Barkley was a Norwich native and is listed on the American Legion WWII Memorial in West Park. Private First Class Barkley was killed in action on Jan. 10, 1943 at the Battle of Guadalcanal. He is buried in Hawaii. Barkley is one of our own fallen heroes who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
The American Legion is honored to accept PFC Barkley’s burial flag and will display it proudly in our front lounge for a month. The flag will then be on display in the History Room.
We would like to thank the following people who made this dedication possible. The staff at Chenango Memorial Hospital for providing excellent care for Mrs. Bernice Finch and helping her with her wishes.
Special thanks to Air Force retired Major Loren Faulknham for providing information and making this possible.
