UV girls stay hot with shutout of Bainbridge-Guilford

NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley remained the hottest girls’ soccer team in the MAC winning by shutout Tuesday over Bainbridge-Guilford.
Amanda Peek scored the lone tally at 20:32 redirecting a long direct kick from defender Kate Ross. The Storm (7-2) improved to 4-1 in league competition and did not allow a Bobcats shot or a cornerkick. The Storm have not lost since winning its own tournament almost two weeks ago.
“It was a well-balanced game and their sweeper got to a lot of our balls in the middle,” said UV coach Chris Bieniek. “We did a nice job passing the ball and it was a true shutout “
UV visits Walton today.

“They have some defenders out, but we played well and we were passing well through our midfield,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle.

WHITNEY POINT – Greene battled back to force overtime, but ended up losing its first Section IV, Division One game this season, Tuesday at Whitney Point.
Amanda Theleman had the winning goal with 2:46 remaining in overtime following a penalty corner. Theleman picked up a loose ball after a failed Greene attempt to clear the ball out of the penalty circle.
“It was pretty evenly matched and they have a great goalie (Alesha Widdall),” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “I was pleased with the way our kids pressured her and kept their composure.”
Greene’s Andrea Day answered Whitney Point’s first goal at 21 minutes just three minutes later. After Molly Hurd gave Point the lead again, Holly Davis sent the game into extra minutes tallying with under two minutes to play.
“We played hard the whole game and Elisa Shearer gave us great minutes off the bench, especially after moving from goalie to a field player,” Carlin said. “Everyone stepped up and it’s an unfortunate result. We had chances at the beginning of overtime, but didn’t get quality shots off.”
Greene (3-2) hosts Vestal Thursday.

Mark Geier tied the game for UV (4-3) with 8:22 left, and four minutes later, Raffi Perry scored after a scramble in front of the goal following a Storm direct kick. “We never really let down or gave up,” said UV coach Matt Osborne. “It was frustrating because we had shots that were off the mark. Playing two nights in a row, fatigue was starting to settle in, but we battled through it.”

AFTON – Greene won all 12 events and extended its meet winning streak to 15 with at win at Afton/B-G/Oxford Tuesday.
The Trojans mixed and matched their lineup, but still had multiple wins from stalwarts Lizzy Buhl, Helen Zaengle, Katie Crowe, Samantha Clink, and Maureen Buck.
A/B-G/O had multiple personal-bests, said head coach Kevin Diefenbacher. Hannah Westfall narrowly missed breaking her own team record in the 100 breaststroke, while captain Marissa Hetzel swam a personal low time in the 500 freestyle. Amy Knapp also recorded a season-best effort in the 50 freestyle. “As I look down the lineup, we had a lot of great times and personal-bests,” Diefenbacher said. “We had lots of seconds and thirds, but just didn’t have the horses for first-place. Greene has a great group of girls.”
A/B-G/O hosts Cooperstown Friday.
