Police arrest owners of Pine Valley Auto
NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office has arrested two local business owners, one accused of stealing over $50,000 from his customers.
The Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the finances at Pine Valley Auto following the arrest of both its owners. The used car dealership shut its doors on East River Road suddenly in July.
Donald J. Newell, 49, Norwich, has been charged with 11 felonies, and his partner Julia A. Squires, 38, Norwich, is charged with two felonies for allegations over illegal business practices over the last six months.
Police arrested Newell for eight counts of third degree larceny, two counts of fourth degree grand larceny and one count of first degree scheme to defraud.
Police said Newell was selling vehicles to consumers and not paying creditors. He also allegedly sold the same vehicle to more than one consumer. Police estimated the ill-gotten gains totaled more than $50,000.
Squires has been arrested on one count of fourth degree grand larceny and first degree scheme to defraud. She is accused of charging customers for license and registration fees for the sale of vehicles, but not completing the transaction.
Newell is currently being held on $20,000 bail at the Chenango County Correctional Facility.
Squires, who has been cooperating with police, is currently released on her own recognizance said Lieutenant James E. Lloyd of the Sheriff’s Office.
Police said they are still investigating and have received a number of complaints regarding the now-closed business, more charges may be pending.
Both Newell and Squires are scheduled to appear in Norwich Town Court tonight at 7.
