United Way members plan for 2007 campaign
CHENANGO COUNTY – With the needs of the community at an all time high, the United Way is kicking off its 2007 campaign hopeful that this year they can raise more money than in years past.
On Saturday, an official United Way kick off event, the “Day of Caring,” will be held, but according to United Way members, the campaign has already begun.
“It’s a ritual of the fall season,” said Jamey Mullen Executive Director of the YMCA. “We’re ready to re-educate everybody on the needs of the community in Chenango County and reintroduce them to the community based agencies that address those needs.”
In the next several weeks, the CUW will begin receiving funding requests from area agencies. Instead of setting an arbitrary goal this year, the CUW is releasing what they anticipate the needs of the community to be and, based on numbers from last year, they estimate over $700,000 in requests to come in this year.
“The number has always been there, but it was never publicly stated,” said Mullen.
“It’s a huge stretch for the goal, but it is a real number,” said Amber Harrison of Norwich Pharmaceuticals Inc.
Last year, $668,000 was requested in community needs in Chenango County. The CUW was able to raise $414,000. United Way members agree that last year’s floods has a negative impact on the monetary aspect of the campaign, but as a result, organizations were formed to address the disaster in the community and to determine a plan for how to handle future disasters.
“As an outcome of the floods, the Chenango Area Recovery Team was formed, and that was a direct result of a meeting convened by the United Way that pulled together service professionals to plan for future disasters,” said Greg May of NBT Bank.
United Way Committee members agreed they hope the community will become more educated about the CUW in the coming year.
“If people don’t understand or have doubts about what we do, please ask. We would love to explain it to you,” Harrison said.
The CUW campaign has officially begun. Many employers will hold work place campaigns, including Preferred Mutual Insurance in New Berlin.
“At Preferred Mutual the company and the employees always give generously, and that commitment to charity work reflects greatly on what Preferred means as a company and who it employs,” said Jamie Gaudreau-Moore of Preferred Mutual.
With the campaign kicking off, the CUW members seemed excited to dive into another year. “I’m enthusiastic and excited about the beginning of the campaign, and I have high hopes for the amount of campaign dollars we can raise this year,” said CUW Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco.
