Holy Family students imagine “whirled” peace

NORWICH – Even in small communities like Chenango County, violence can be seen everyday, and the ideal of world peace is becoming a more and more distant concept, but students at Holy Family School are trying to spread a message of peace in a new way.
Today, students at Holy Family will be taking part in a nationwide initiative for “whirled” peace. The students have created pinwheels that hold messages of peace and will be placing them on the school lawn.
Holy Family event coordinator and second grade teacher Nikole Strano said a parent introduced her to the idea. Strano was quick to point out that the pinwheel display is not a political statement. “The pinwheels represent world peace, but not just in war. It could include peace at war, peace in a community or even peace within yourself,” Strano said.
The Pinwheels for Peace project was started in 2005 by two art teachers in Florida, in an attempt to give students a chance to express their feelings about what was going on in the world and in their lives.
Throughout the week, every student at Holy Family has created a two-sided pinwheel with a picture of what they feel represents peace on one side and a paragraph about peace on the other. Although the concept seems complex for some of the younger children, Strano said they seemed to understand it. One second grader she said wrote “peace is like watching a river,” while another compared peace to the sound of the wind.
The pinwheels will be planted in the school lawn today, the International Day of Peace. The display will be on the school grounds throughout the weekend.
“On Sept. 21, keep a lookout for the pinwheels – the spinning of the pinwheels in the wind will spread thoughts and feelings of peace throughout the country and the world,” a press release about the program stated.
Currently over 2,000 communities nationwide are participating in the program. Strano hopes Holy Family will continue to take part in the program in the coming years.
Holy Family is located at 17 Prospect St., Norwich. For more information about the program visit the web site www.pinwheelsforpeace.com or contact Holy Family at 337-2207.
