OXFORD – Oxford Academy High School held their Fall Awards Program and Open House last Wednesday. Many students received academic or attendance awards and then parents and children were invited to experience a shortened version of their child’s school day. Parents had an opportunity to meet the teachers and learn about the requirements and expectations for each course of study.

The new high school teachers were on hand to greet parents for the first time; they were: Lance Thorne in physical education; Jeff Weinell in business education; Rebecca Heiss in science; Mike Chrystie in social studies; and Kate Stopper in instrumental music. Both returning teachers as well as new ones had ideas for interesting lessons and better teaching results.

In biology Ms. Heiss was full of excitement about the projects her students have done such as designing brochures on the computer and singing about cell organelles. Next they were going to create their own model cell! In Ms. Schaefer’s Global social studies class, taking notes has been replaced with better learning methods like Power Point presentation projects, posters, rap songs and learning vocabulary words. “Success for every student” is one of the goals set by the Oxford Academy Board of Education who are committed to the school community. Their new policies seem evident by the faculty’s fresh, new approach.
