Greene rolls to blowout win

GREENE – There won’t be many more division games for Greene this season like Friday’s home contest with Newark Valley.
The Trojans won their second Section IV, Division V game this season and followed up a bruising early-season schedule with a laugher over the mistake-prone Cardinals, 44-6. “It was definitely a different atmosphere on the sidelines tonight,” said Greene head coach Tim Paske. “It was another game, and our goal was to be better today than yesterday. We’re climbing the mountain to the end of the season.”
Greene head coach Tim Paske will admit that his team needed to do more than just put its uniforms on to beat Newark Valley, but it was surely a welcomed departure from recent weeks when his team was soundly beaten by Unatego, and nearly lost to Norwich.
Junior Nate Whittaker was the point man for most of the Trojans’ big plays in the first half as Greene built a 24-0 lead. He put the first points on the board returning NV’s opening punt 64 yards for a score. Whittaker picked off the Cardinals’ first two pass attempts – two of four first-half Cardinals turnovers – and he threw a 20-yard TD pass to Ben Adams. In the opening half alone, Whittaker was 9-for-12 for 106 yards, and two of those incompletions were drops.
“We worked a lot on pass protection and it showed tonight,” Paske said. “When we dropped back and formed a pocket, Nate had plenty of time to throw the football. Ben did a nice job adjusting and getting the ball.”
Greene’s vacillating running game in the first half was likely the lone sore spot for the Trojans’ coaching staff. On one play a Trojans back would run free, and on the next a back would find zero operating room. Dan Carlin ran to daylight scoring on a 60-yard run in the first quarter to spotlight the ground attack that managed just 36 more positive yards the rest of the first-half attempts.
It got much better the rest of the way with Jake Wentlent dashing 51 yards for the score on the second Trojans offensive play of the second half. On the following possession, Greene used all of five plays for another rushing TD, this one a one-yard plunge from Garrett Hickey. Wentlent added an 18-yard scoot in the fourth and finished with 95 yards on the ground.
“We definitely did have more consistency running the ball,” Paske said of the second half. “We talked to the guys up front at halftime and made some adjustments. We just wanted them to come off the ball hard and hit some people.”
The win was the eighth straight at home for the Trojans dating back to the early part of 2005. Greene (3-1) travels to Watkins Glen Friday. The Senecas were soundly whipped by Unatego Friday, 80-18.
