Oxford gets its confidence back
Oxford 49, Hancock 8
HANCOCK – Oxford made a 180-degree turn from last week’s drubbing to Walton as it doled out a lopsided loss to host Hancock Friday night.
Dustin Christophersen had a breakout game for Oxford rushing for four touchdowns and a career-high 151 yards. Scott Shackelton had 136 yards on the ground and one score, and Travis Frank added a TD run. The Blackhawks finished with 344 yards rushing and 437 yards of total offense. “Going into the game, we wanted to get our confidence back,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “We could have packed it in after last week’s loss.”
Christophersen rushed for three TDs in the first half scoring from 26, 55, and 16 yards. Shackelton capped a 37-point first half hitting home from five yards. Kyle Smith opened the scoring returning an interception 23 yards to put Oxford on the board. “The offensive and defensive lines set the tone for us,” Chrystie said. “The holes our backs were running through were huge. We executed well, and when you do that you’ll have success.”
Christophersen and Frank had scoring runs in the third quarter before Chrystie emptied the bench.

Chenango Valley 21, Norwich 7
CHENANGO BRIDGE – With little success moving the ball on the ground, Chenango Valley went to the air repeatedly to recoup an early touchdown deficit and shut down the Purple Tornado in the first half to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Matt Mullins went 10-for-18 for 178 yards throwing two first-half TD passes to Trevor Cola. The one big run of the day for CV – a Cola 57-yarder in the third quarter – set up Brian Stinson’s three-yard TD run in the fourth.
However, it was a day for Mullins and the CV passing attack on offense, and a sturdy defense that bettered its previous best outing from a week ago allowing Norwich just 154 yards of total offense.
One yard of that Tornado aggregate was the sum of TD drive in the first quarter. Mullins mishandled a snap near his own endzone, and Norwich recovered the pigskin about half a yard from the goal. Norwich senior Chris Mattingly churned through a small hole for the game’s first points and a 7-0 Norwich advantage in the opening stanza. Mattingly, who leads the Norwich rushing attack this year, had just 30 yards on the ground. As a team, Norwich managed just 106 rushing yards, and many of those came on a third-quarter drive to start the second half that produced four first downs, but no points.
Two drives after Norwich’s initial score, CV put its first points on the board. On the second play of the scoring drive, Cola grabbed a pass from Mullins and raced 46 yards for the score. The go-ahead TD for CV was more a work of art, execution, and precise passing.
Taking over at its own 40 with 1:36 left in the half, Mullins completed four straight passes at one point, the last a 14-yarder to Cola from 14 yards away.
The two clubs traded possessions and punts in the third quarter, and the last NHS possession ended with a Justin Ballin punt pinning the Warriors inside their own 10. Cola changed the field position in a hurry with his aforementioned long run, and first-down completion to Brian Eggleston inside the Norwich 10 led to Stinson’s capping score.

Walton 66, Bainbridge-Guilford 0
WALTON – Nothing could have prepared the Bobcats for the onslaught in the second half that produced 52 second-half points for the unbeaten Warriors, who looked every bit like a top-three ranked Class D team in the state Saturday afternoon.
Casey Killian started the barrage with a one-yard scoring run, his second TD of the day. Dustin Bowker hauled in a 59-yard scoring pass from Patrick O’Brien, Logan Wood raced 65 yards to paydirt, and Bryant Mead’s six-yard TD run ended a 30-point stanza.
Mead’s second scoring run – this one from two yards out – ended the Walton offense’s scoring; however, the defense was not done. Chris Mills returned an interception 98 yards for a score, and late in the game, Wood picked up a B-G fumble and traipsed 30 yards to punt his club over the 60-point mark.
Wood had 119 yards rushing on just seven carries to lead Walton, who finished with 450 yards of total offense, while also limited B-G to 71 yards. It was the second straight shutout win for Walton, who blanked Oxford, 56-0, a week ago.

Deposit 6, UV-Edmeston 3
DEPOSIT – This time, giving up six points was not enough for the Storm in a loss to Deposit Saturday.
The Lumberjacks, plagued by 14 penalties and three turnovers during the contest, put together a winning drive early in the fourth quarter that was capped by Luke Krembs’ 12-yard TD reception from Darin Wignall with 8:34 to play. Krembs helped extend the drive with a 14-yard first-down reception on a third-and-10 situation.
“Our defense was outstanding, but (Deposit) clicked on that drive, and it was really the only time that they did in the game,” said UV-Edmeston coach Jack Loeffler.
The Storm moved toward a touchdown in the third quarter and came within a foot of scoring. Deposit stuffed a dive play on second down, and recorded a tackle for a big loss on the next play forcing a Jordan Williams 27-yard field goal.
UV-E had two possessions in the fourth quarter that moved toward the goal, the latter ending on an interception in the endzone after advancing to the Deposit 13. “We decided to try and throw (for the touchdown) instead of running it like we should have,” Loeffler said, second-guessing the playcalling. “We were thinking about attempting another field goal if we didn’t score the touchdown.”
Jay Lloyd led the UV-Edmeston defense with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Clinton 22, Sherburne-Earlville 20
CLINTON – Saturday afternoon’s matchup with Clinton had a familiar look to it for Sherburne-Earlville as the contest resembled its matchup with A-P-W the previous week. This time, however, the Marauders came up on the short end.
James Jarrett threw his third TD pass of the game hitting Brendan Chrobak from 32 yards for the tying score. The Tigers added a successful two-point run on the conversion to cinch up its second win in as many years over the Marauders.
“It was kind of like last week,” said S-E coach Mickey James. “We were pushed around by A-P-W and won; and we pushed Clinton around, but they won.”
Billy Northey rushed for 221 yards and one score, and Wheeler Brunschmid had one TD run and caught a 46-yard TD pass from Logan Klockowski. The Marauders had two other potential scoring drives halted when big gainers were called back due to penalties. “We kind of dominated, but made enough mistakes to lose,” James said. “We’re a Jeckyll and Hyde team this year. We play hard and fast at home, and soft and slow on the road.”
The Marauders travel to South Jefferson Friday.
