A local business with 200 million potential customers
NORWICH – “eBay” – the popular on-line auction – has created a vast customer base of people seeking all types of merchandise, and whole companies have been created to be experts in the art of electronic peddling.
E-Sell-It is a local eBay savvy business that has established itself as a high-ranking and preferred user. The company acquired its status from regularly selling or buying products on eBay and receiving positive feedback from both their perspective buyers and sellers.
“We’ve always been selling things through eBay. We decided to start the business around here, because we didn’t really see a strong market for a lot of miscellaneous things most people might want to get rid of. Instead of keeping that old baseball card set locked up in the attic or throwing them away, you can now put them on the Internet for over 200 million people to look at,” said James M. Knecht, owner.
Knecht operates the business with his wife Tracey.
“Some people don’t have the time or the know-how of getting their merchandise on the website. We’ve made it our hobby and job to create an appealing product that is well advertised in the eBay community. It’s really in our best interest because the only way we’ll ever make money on commission is if you make even more,” said Tracey.
The store has a long list of successful finds from a man buying a tea cup set at a garage sale for 25 cents and selling it for $26 to another who purchased a set of oil lamps from a consignment store and sold them online for almost $700.
“As far as making your millions, it’s about as likely as winning the lottery, but the reality is you can make a lot of extra money if you know what to look for,” said James.
Tracey said she is currently working on an expansive collection of old superhero action figures. “Some are sold as a group, some by themselves, we start off by appraising nearly everything so we can get an idea of what people are willing to pay. There really hasn’t been many things we couldn’t get an estimate on,” said Tracey.
Once identified, the couple catalogues each piece and places it on the web with a complete description, picture and just about anything else someone may want to know about an item.
“Usually the more information and images you have of something, the more people will be willing to make an offer, that’s common sense really,” said James.
Tracey said she expects to spend dozens of hours organizing the collection of toys. Each piece will be evaluated, put on the web and then shipped out –which E-Sell-it does for every sale.
The business charges a range of different commission fee depending on the ultimate value an item goes for. There is also a small fee for items that never sell.
“We lose money if things don’t get sold, and often for the lower cost items we’ll put more time in them than we get back, but that’s just a part of the business,” said James.
The company has some limitations and cannot sell alcohol or firearms unless they are considered valuable for another reason – very rare or antique items, for example, are exceptions.
