Storm offense comes to life
UV-Edmeston 47, Livingston Manor-Roscoe 8
NEW BERLIN – Unadilla Valley-Edmeston came out of its season-long offensive funk in a big way winning its second game of the season Friday night against Section IX’s Livingston Manor-Roscoe.
Following a scoreless first quarter in which the visiting team drove for an initial score, the Storm put up nearly as many points in one stanza as it had in the first four games.
Mason Wyman scored on two short TD runs, threw an 18-yard TD pass to Jay Lloyd, and Tom Giordano rushed for the first of his three scores turning the contest 180 degrees. The 28 second-quarter points were just one point short of the 29 scored in four games while compiling a 1-3 mark.
“When they scored on the opening kickoff, that sent us a wake-up call,” said UV-Edmeston coach Jack Loeffler. “That first drive was pretty much all the offense they had, and they didn’t cross midfield in the second half.”
Giordano added scoring runs of 18, and two yards in the second half on his way to a season-high 95 yards rushing. Matt Harrington galloped 44 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter, his first career varsity touchdown. The Storm finished with 308 yards of offense, far and away their most complete offensive performance. “They had some small kids and young kids up front, so we thought we could attack up the middle with our running game,” Loeffler said. “Our defense has been doing the job the last few games, and the message to the offense this week was that they needed to get the ball into the endzone. We haven’t been doing that until this game.”
The Storm host Southern Springs Saturday afternoon.

Bainbridge-Guilford 28, Harpursville 16
BAINBRIDGE – Licking its wounds from back-to-back lopsided losses, the Bobcats found the right salve Friday night in a home victory over Harpursville.
Chris McGinnis threw three TDs and ran for a fourth score as the Bobcats slowed the high-powered Harpursville offense and limited the Hornets’ big plays. “We worked all week on defense about taking care of the outside game because their kids are so quick,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “Defensively, we bend a little, but we didn’t break. Our kids came up with some huge defensive plays tonight.”
Twice the Bobcats stopped Harpursville’s fourth-and-short opportunities, and each time it led to a B-G score. The first was a 33-yard TD pass from McGinnis to Dylan Whittaker, and the second – in the third quarter – ended in McGinnis’ two-yard keeper to complete a sustained drive.
McGinnis was efficient in the passing game throwing for a career-high 206 yards on just 5-of-6 attempts. He added a 48-yard TD toss to Travis Dickey late in the first half that put his club up for good, and a 59-yarder to Whittaker in the third that was tipped off a Harpursville player before finding Whittaker’s hands.
Dustin Ross led the B-G running game finishing with 94 yards. “It was a good victory and we needed this in the worst way,” Mattingly said. “Our pass protection was good when we needed to get the long ball off, and we thought we could throw the ball deep from scouting Harpursville. We thought we had an advantage with the size of our receivers.”

Greene 44, Watkins Glen 0
WATKINS GLEN – It was business as usual for the Trojans, who avoided the trap of playing down to a lesser foe in a romp Friday night on the Senecas’ home turf.
It was the first shutout for Greene (4-1) this season, who rushed for a season-high 337 yards and totaled 399 yards of total offense. Defensively, the Trojans allowed a season-low 76 yards to winless Watkins Glen. “The kids responded well this week and were able to maintain their focus,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “It’s another division game, and they knew they had to be ready to play.”
After a one-TD first quarter in which Justin VanWert caught a 17-yard TD pass from Nate Whittaker, the Trojans opened a big advantage by halftime. Chris Engler scored on runs of six and eight yards, and Whittaker connected with VanWert from two yards out for the duo’s second TD connection.
Garrett Hickey had a 22-yard TD run in the third, and Jake Wentlent capped a season-best 131-yard day on the ground scoring from four yards in the final stanza. “We executed our stuff and we had a lot of good things happening on both sides of the ball,” Paske said.
Greene’s defense had four sacks and forced two turnovers. The Trojans play at Trumansburg (3-2) this weekend.

South Jefferson 34, Sherburne-Earlville 12
ADAMS – South Jefferson hit a big play early and showed uncommon balance in its running and passing game to defeat the Marauders Friday night.
Jamieson Crast threw a 76-yard TD pass on a third-and-eight in the first quarter to put his club on the board. He finished with 203 yards passing and two TDs, while running back Jake Smith had 154 yards on the ground and one score. “Offensively they are a really good team,” said S-E coach Mickey James. “Crast does everything for them, and their offense makes you defend every inch of the field.”
Smith scored on a first-quarter TD run lifting the Spartans to a 14-point halftime lead, and Crast tossed his second TD of the game in the third quarter before the Marauders had an answer.
Billy Northey scored his sixth TD of the season on a three-yard run, and he finished with 126 yards on 26 carries to lift his season total to a county-leading 890 yards rushing through the first five weeks.
Logan Klockowski tossed a four-yard TD pass to Wheeler Brunschmid in the fourth quarter that pared South Jeff’s lead to 26-12. “We had a couple other times where we should have scored,” James said. “We played harder than heck physically, but we need to be better mentally. We can’t make the little mistakes that cost you.”
Klockowski had 120 yards passing for S-E (2-3) and Phil Price had a team-high 79 yards receiving on three catches. The Marauders host unbeaten Cazenovia Friday.
