Oxford Rod & Gun Club hosts Sportsman’s Weekend

OXFORD – The Oxford Rod & Gun Club hosted the 2nd Annual Sportsman’s Weekend Sept. 22-23. Sports enthusiasts came to the Ingraham Road Club for the 3-D archery shoot, an all-you-can-eat breakfast and/or lunch, several prizes, raffles, vendors, displays and archery games. There was a lot to see and do such as some fun new novelty archery shoots to test your skill and interesting exhibits.
Coot Connelly of Coot’s Cutlery, Norwich, brought about 1/8 of his incredible collection of knives for display. He has one of the largest knife collections on the east coast. Coot also professionally sharpened knives throughout the weekend brought in by visitors.
Warren & Ruth Smith of Chenango Taxidermy, Preston, had some of their finest mounts on display. They had examples of internal forms and were happy to explain the entire taxidermy process. They mount animals as small as a chipmunk to as big as a bear.
Tim Law of CNY Power Sports of Cortland had an ATV right inside the Club for visitors to get a close-up view and even have a seat.
Scott VanGiesen, a Dan Wesson gunsmith of CZ-USA, Norwich, displayed his fine line of Dan Wesson and CZ firearms. CZ-USA generously donated a CZ .22 cal. rifle which was raffled off to support the Junior Shooter Program.
Other items that were raffled off by the Club included a Remington Model 750 Woodsmaster Carbine .30-06 rifle or a PSE XForce HF Pro Series compound bow. There were gift certificates from Mayhood's Sporting Goods too.
The Venturing Crew 65 served an all you can eat breakfast and a great lunch later on. This was particularly good for the archers who came for the 2-day 3-D shoot.
The Oxford Rod and Gun Club added a new fourteen target field archery course and redesigned their 3-D course just this year. Another addition is a new marked yardage practice area with four target butts providing practice opportunities from 10 yards to 80 yards.
The Oxford Club is affiliated with the National Field Archery Association and the NY Field Archers and Bowhunters. The Club participates in the Central Area League of NYFAB which has a schedule of field archery shoots at various locations, now including Oxford.
This was the last field archery shoot event for the season, but not the last event for the Club. A trap shoot is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 28 As always, there will be an all-you-can-eat breakfast, 7:30-10:30 a.m., which is open to the public. All are welcome to stop in and check out your local sporting club.
