Animal abuser sent back to jail

NORWICH – A man who was found guilty of starving a dog to death was brought back to court for violating his probation Friday.
The Chenango County Court was forced to issue its third arrest warrant for Douglas A. Haslett, 51,Greene, in the last year. Haslett failed to check in with probation repeatedly and then failed to show up for his court appearance. “Mr. Haslett has no car, no phone and getting a hold of him has always been a very difficult situation,” said Public Defender Alan Gordon.
Gordon explained that the missed appointments were the result of Haslett’s inability to find transportation.
“I understand your problems Mr. Haslett, but they’re your problems, and you are trying to make them our problem,” said Judge W. Howard Sullivan.
Haslett was sentenced to 30 days in the Chenango County Correctional Facility and agreed to attend his regular appointments when released.
Haslett was arrested in December of 2006 for failing to appear in court on two separate occasions and for also failing to appear for his court-ordered mental evaluations.
The Sheriff’s Department arrested Haslett last year on Sept. 11 for ten counts of failure to license a dog, nine counts of cruelty to animals and one count of aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. One of the dogs was found in the defendant’s freezer, apparently placed there after it had starved to death, said the District Attorney’s Office. In his defense, Haslett said he was planning to perform an autopsy on the animal. Sullivan ordered that Haslett be psychologically evaluated at the time. Gordon said his client acknowledged the fact he needed psychological treatment and was getting some medications from the Veterans Administration.
District Attorney Joseph McBride said, “He was released prior to this with concern over his mental status and ability to comply with his conditions of release, and he has demonstrated that he lacks either the ability or the desire to comply with the court.”
Haslett pleaded guilty to one felony count of animal cruelty and was sentenced to one year interim probation. Because of his limited income, he was ordered to pay $400 in restitution to the Town of Greene. The final condition of Haslett’s plea bargain prohibits him from owning, possessing or harboring any animals.
Haslett willingly surrendered the nine surviving dogs to the SPCA (Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) for adoption after his arrest last September.
