City receives $6,000 for Preserve NY Grant
NORWICH – Tonight, representatives from the Preservation League of New York State in conjunction with the State Council on the Arts will be presenting the City of Norwich with a check for $6,000.
The $6,000 will be awarded as part of the Preserve New York Grant Program, which provides support for cultural resource surveys, historic structure reports and historic landscape reports.
According to City Planning and Community Development Specialist Todd Dreyer, the city has hired a consultant, Cynthia Carrington Carter, to perform a cultural resource survey.
“We’ve hired Cynthia Carter Carrington to document all buildings and residences in the city that are over 50 years old,” Dreyer said. According to a press release sent by the Preservtion League of New York State, although Norwich has two State and National Register historic districts, large parts of the city have either never been surveyed or have not been evaluated since the 1970s. The project will provide new documentation on residences, commercial blocks and industrial buildings throughout the city.
Generally, cultural resource surveys are used to identify, assess and recognize historic buildings, structures and areas. “The document will be used to assist in determining if buildings are of historic significance,” Dreyer said.
Once completed, the survey can be used to apply for properties to be placed on the national or state registry of historic places. It could also prove useful if the city decides to make a local historic zone.
