Legion dignitaries to visit Oxford

OXFORD – Chenango County American Legion Commander Fred Baker of Post 376 announces the annual visitation of the Department of New York American Legion Commander William Burnett, on Friday. Chairing arrangements are Sixth District Vice Commander Bruce Whitney and past Chenango County Commander Patricia Marso of Oxford.
Accompanying State Commander Burnett will be Department President Carol Johnson and Department Commander of the Sons of the Legion, Gerald Ketchum. At 10:45 a.m., the group will visit the New York State Home for Veterans and their Dependants for a press conference and guided tour of the Home.
Following lunch and visits with the members of the Home, they will adjourn to the Oxford Historical Society where Society officers, including Sarah Seaman, a retired nurse from the Vets’ Home, will share photos and memorabilia from the Oxford Home.
Commander Burnett will be joined by Alternate National Committeeman, Richard Kaiser from Delaware County, Fifth and Sixth District Vice Commander Carl Griffith, Sixth District Vice Commander Sandi Junker of Broome, and past Chenango County Commander Ray Johnson, husband of Department President Carol.
Commander Burnett’s party will adjourn to their hotel or visit Lt. Warren Post 189 in Norwich.
At 6 p.m., they will return to Fort Hill Post 376 in Oxford for cocktails and at 7 p.m. enjoy a steak dinner. The Commander’s special project is the National Emergency Fund, and donations in his name will be accepted at this time.

Department of New York American Legion Commander
Department Commander William H. Burnett was born on March 13, 1944, in Norristown, PA, and grew up in Bridgeport, PA. He moved to Lockport, NY in 1971, where he raised his daughter Kelly Burnett MacDonell, and son Scott Burnett.
Burnett is now retired member of the Local 237 International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Niagara Falls.
A four year veteran of the United States Air Force, Burnett enlisted at Philadelphia, PA on December 30, 1964. His duty assignments included the 763rd Radar Squadron in Lockport, NY and Det. 8, 621st Tactical Control Squadron (PACAF) at Phitsanulock, Thailand. He attained the rank of Sergeant.
Burnett is a 32 year member of the B. Leo Dolan Post 410 in Lockport, where he served as Commander. He also served as Commander of Niagara County and the Eighth District and Department Vice Commander of the Seventh and Eighth Districts. On the National level he serves the National Counter-Subversive Activities Committee.
Among local dignitaries invited to join Commander Burnett are Town of Oxford Supervisor Lawrence Wilcox and Oxford Mayor Terry Stark, both veterans.
All veterans and friends are welcome to visit with dignitaries.
