New series focuses on Y Giants football

The fall football season brings memories of 60 years ago and Norwich’s only semi-pro football team – the Y Giants.
On Saturday afternoons in the fall of 1947, football fans filled the bleachers at Alumni Field to cheer the Norwich High School team on to victory, as they had for many years. But in ‘47, fans returned on Sunday to root on the new team in town, The Y Giants. For the next five years, the team would thrill the Norwich crowd with their own style of hard-hitting football and rack up a winning record that was really quite amazing.
Beginning Monday, Oct. 15, The Evening Sun will print a series of articles written by Jim Dunne, a long-time fan of local sports, that traces the five-year history of the Y Giants. They include anecdotes gleaned from Perry Browne’s game accounts published in The Norwich Sun and memories related to him by former Giants who are still in the area.
