Record night for Greene in first-ever win over Norwich

Girls’ Swimming

Greene 98, Norwich 85
GREENE – On the schedule it was just a non-league meet; a break from its Greene’s league schedule in the Midstate Athletic Conference. In reality, it proved on of the most significant wins in program history for the Trojans.
Winning the last three events, all with school-record times, Greene defeated Norwich for the first time in the program’s history. “Norwich is one of the premier programs in Section IV, and they produce a section champion almost every year,” said Greene coach Mike Platta, who earned his 100th career coaching win directing Greene’s boys and girls. “This was a feather in our cap, and everyone (on our team) walked out with a smile.”
The two Chenango County teams, vying for the unofficial top status in the area, traded victories and the lead up to the 100-yard freestyle. Norwich junior Savanna Keator won that event giving the Tornado a one-point advantage with five events left. Helen Zaengle took the next event, the 500 freestyle for Greene, setting the stage for a dramatic, impressive, and record-breaking finish.
Lizzy Buhl starting the final trio of wins and records taking the 100 backstroke in 1:04.11. Not to be outdone, Katie Crowe lowered her own record in the 100 breastroke winning that in 1:16:33 to edge her Norwich foe by just 16 hundreths of a second. The foursome of Maureen Buck, Samantha Clink, Zaengle, and Buhl lowered the 400-yard freestyle relay record timing a 4:01.51 to beat the Norwich team by a second. “I told all of the swimmers that we would probably split all of the firsts and seconds with Norwich, and it would come down to who won the thirds and fourths,” Platta said. “They made me look like a smarter man than I am.”
Norwich had a pair of victories from Rachel Lorenz and Keator, the only four triumphs for the Tornado.
Greene started the meet off with a record in the 200 medley relay. Buhl, Crowe, Zaengle, and Buck timed a 2:02.62 to set the tone for a 21st straight meet victory. Greene improved to 10-0 on the season. “Other than beating Delhi for the first time, this has to be our biggest win,” Platta added.
