Storm’s confidence growing
UV-Edmeston 27, Southern Springs 7
NEW BERLIN – Jordan Williams didn’t play like a third-string quarterback, and he’ll like man the starting QB spot the rest of the season after the Storm evened their log Saturday afternoon against Southern Springs.
With UV-E’s top two signal-callers Mason Wyman and Josh Wright out of the lineup with injuries – Wright lost for the season, in fact – Williams had two TD runs and returned the opening kickoff 72 yards to put his team on the board. It was a big improvement for Williams, who struggled as the season-opening starter against B-G. “We’ve been working (Williams) in during practice ‘just in case,’” said UV-E coach Jack Loeffler. “He’s had some success at other positions this season, so I think that helped him.”
Tom Giordano served as the workhorse running back finishing with 94 yards on the ground and a nine-yard TD run in the third quarter. Matt Harrington and Zach Rifanburg led a UV defense that allowed just 52 yards rushing combining for 12 tackles. “Our confidence is growing each week,” Loeffler said. “We’re stepping on the field expecting to win, not hoping that we’ll win.”
UV-E (3-3) plays at Harpursville Saturday afternoon.

Oxford 21, Delhi 16
OXFORD – Oxford shook off the potentially devastating effects of losing a two-touchdown lead by driving for the winning touchdown in the waning moments Friday night for a Class D division win over Delhi.
The Blackhawks (3-3), out of the playoff mix and playing for respectability, put a huge dent in Delhi’s postseason hopes with the win. “At this point of the season, win or lose, we want to play well and put together some solid games,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “We know we’re a good football team, and we want to go out and prove it.”
The Blackhawks needed to regroup quickly after Delhi scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to erase a 15-0 deficit. Trent Kathmann’s TD run with four minutes left put the visiting club up by one.
The Blackhawks, sticking strictly with the run, drove 58 yards for the touchdown. Senior running back Scott Shackelton had first down runs of 13 and 15 yards along the way, and senior quarterback John Witchella scrambled the final 10 yards for the go-ahead points. “Last week we put together a late drive and weren’t able to finish,” Chrystie said. “This week we needed to finish it. It was senior night, and we wanted to go out with a win.”
Shackelton finished with a season-high 156 yards on the ground and 14-yard TD run in the first quarter. Oxford picked up a safety in the second stanza, and Witchella’s one-yard TD keeper made it 15-0 at the break.

Cazenovia 49, Sherburne-Earlville 14
SHERBURNE – Sherburne-Earlville coach Mickey James said the longest drive Cazenovia had Friday night was the ride over to Sherburne.
The Lakers played on S-E’s half of the field the entire first half putting five scores on the board en route to a Section III Class B division win Friday.
The damage began early in the game when and S-E snap sailed over quarterback Logan Klockowski’s head, and the bounding, squirting ball landed in a Lakers defender’s mitts on the S-E 15. Three plays later, Chris Nourse rushed four yards for the score, one of three Nourse TDs on the day.
Cazenovia backed S-E up with great kickoff coverage and strong defense. The Marauders, wary of the Lakers’ punt return game, launched short kicks out of bounds, and when the ball was returnable, the Lakers brought the ball back for big yardage. The four other TD drives in the first half for Cazenovia wer 29, 49, 49, and 29 yards. “Field position killed us, and that one bad play early took the wind out of our sails,” James said. On the first drive prior to the initial turnover, S-E was moving the ball with three first downs. “The big thing I hope (our guys) learned tonight s that you can’t let one mistake get you down. The play is over and you just have to move on.”
The Marauders’ Billy Northey had TD runs of 24 and six yards in the fourth quarter finishing with 145 yards on 22 carries. He went over the 1,000-mark for the season and has 1,035 through six games. “We got them (the team) together at halftime, and they came out and played a lot harder,” James said of his squad. “Hopefully they know that they play so much better when they play hard.”

Trumansburg 24, Greene 18 (OT)
TRUMANSBURG – Forced to forfeit two games for using an ineligible player, Trumansburg gave itself an inside track to one of four playoff spots in Class C after holding back Greene’s comeback effort Saturday evening.
The Trojans forced overtime with two TDs in the final stanza, but with the loss needs to win one of its final two games to make the postseason. “It’ll be nice to finally get back home,” said Greene coach Tim Paske. “We’ve been on the road four of our six games.”
Trojans junior quarterback Nate Whittaker ran for TDs of 55 and one yard in the fourth to erase an 18-6 Raiders lead. Each point-after attempt was off the mark.
Greene found itself going backward in the overtime when Whittaker was sacked for an eight-yard loss to the 28-yard line on the first play of OT. Jake Wentlent ran for a short gain, and two pass attempts by Whittaker fell incomplete.
Trumansburg took possession and promptly scored the last yard covered by Tyler Gunningsmith to end the contest. “We were changing things up and played solid defense in the first quarter,” Paske said. “Their double dives and option game hurt us.”
One big play was a fumbled option pitch that Greene was unable to recover. T-burg’s Chris Stranger did get a handle of the loose ball, and he ran 65 yards to the Greene two-yard line setting up one of the host club’s three TD runs in regulation play. “Their running game was really deceptive and we needed to do our job every time,” Paske said. “When we didn’t do our job, they had a big play.”
Greene (4-2) hosts Lansing (5-1) Friday.
