TerraCycle Inc. provides eco-friendly bird feeders to local schools
NORWICH – In an attempt to raise awareness of ecological and social responsibility, TerraCycle Inc. has worked out a way to provide their newest product, eco-friendly bird feeders, to local area schools.
From now until Wednesday, TerraCycle Inc. will be selling their new eco-friendly bird feeder at area Wal-Mart locations for under $5, and for every three bird feeders sold, Perry Browne Elementary School will receive one free of charge.
Founded in 2001 by two Princeton University students, Tom Szaky and Jon Beyer, TerraCycle Inc. first began their eco-capitalism company with a plan to turn waste and process it into something useful. The first product the students created was a plant food. By taking waste from the university dining hall and processing it in their “worm gin,” Szaky and Beyer were able to produce a non-toxic and all organic plant food.
Over the years, the company has continued to grow and expand as big box retailers throughout the United States and Canada have picked up their eco-friendly products. Now with a full line of fertilizers, drain cleaners, potting mix, seed starters, bug repellent and bird feeders, the company is trying to spread their message of eco-responsibility to area class rooms.
The TerraCycle bird feeder is environmentally friendly. The bird seed is packaged in a re-used, two-liter soda bottle, which attaches to a base made out of recycled plastic. The product carries a “Zerofootprint” seal.
“We’re also providing lesson suggestions on ornithology curriculum,” said Jennifer Wilkey, a media relations employee at TerraCycle Inc.
Currently, Perry Brown Elementary is the only school involved in the TerraCycle program, but Wilkey said the company is eager to have other area schools sign up as well.
