Town looking for new highway superintendent

NORWICH – His name will be the only one on the ballot and he will win the November election, but Stanley Foulds won’t be the Town of Norwich highway superintendent anymore.
At Monday’s town meeting, Foulds’ letter of resignation was read aloud to the board and public. Foulds announced his last day working for the town will be Oct. 12 as he begins his first day as superintendent of buildings and grounds for the Norwich City School District just three days later.
Foulds will be replacing Ed Spencer, who has retired from the district after roughly 25 years of service.
Foulds said he was not necessarily looking for a new job, but the position at the school “just happened to fall at the right time.”
“I enjoyed working for the town; it’s been fun. The guys are knowledgeable. I am simply moving on to bigger and better things,” he said.
The board expressed regret and many of the board members said he will be missed, including Supervisor David Law, who has worked with Foulds since they both were elected in 2003.
Foulds’ position will be vacant following the election. Law will appoint someone to fill the remainder of Foulds’ term for one year. That person will have to run to serve another year in 2008 and run one more time to get the election process back on track for a regular two-year term in 2009. Applications are available and are being taken at the town office on Hale Street in Norwich.
“We have already started looking into who can take over the position and there are men already working for the town that may be interested in it,” said Law.
