Halfway House Bridge closed
NORWICH – The Halfway House bridge, or Chenango County Rt. 32B, closed to traffic Oct. 12 indefinitely.
Department of Public Works Director Randy Gibbon said the bridge was flagged for defaults in six areas after a routine inspection by state highway officials last week. He said he learned of the violations on Friday morning.
“It will cripple us for emergency purposes on state Rt. 12 between Oxford and Norwich because we won’t be able to divert traffic to 32,” Gibbon said Friday afternoon.
Gibbon said the New York State Department of Transportation inspects bridges every two years in the county. Last week’s visit was made without prior notification.
Construction on a new bridge was already underway; that is scheduled to be finished in the fall of 2008.
