Bobcats blank Oxford, 6-0
B-G 6, Oxford 0
BAINBRIDGE – Bainbridge-Guilford was eliminated from a Class D playoff spot on Saturday, but did its part to keep slim playoff hopes alive shutting out Oxford Friday night.
Chris McGinnis threw a 34-yard TD pass to Dustin Rutz in the first quarter for the game’s only score. The contest was hampered by numerous mistakes on both sides of the ball. For Oxford it was five costly turnovers, while the Bobcats were maligned by 10 penalties for 80 yards. “What a slugfest...it was ugly,” said B-G head coach Tim Mattingly, whose team clinched a second straight winning season under his leadership. “This was a tough game to coach – and stressful. Either team could have pulled it out, and our defense was outstanding.”
It was the defense that capitalized on an early Oxford turnover that led to only score. B-G recovered a fumble and quickly went for the home run getting the TD hookup on the very next play. “We like to do that (go for the big play) after a turnover, but a lot depends on field position,” Mattingly said. “Being in their territory, we wanted to go for it right away. It was a perfect throw by Chris and an unbelievable catch by Dustin.”
Oxford had some success moving the ball finishing with 191 yards on the ground led by a 16-carry, 84-yard day by senior Scott Shackelton. It was, however, Oxford’s second shutout defeat this season. “We knew we had to contain the Shackelton kid and force them into some third-and-longs,” Mattingly said. “We were able to do that quite a bit, and their turnovers helped quite a bit. They had some success at times, but we really made some huge plays on defense.”
Dustin Ross rushed for 119 yards on 22 carries to lead B-G’s offense.

Lansing 22, Greene 14
GREENE – Greene dropped a second straight game for the first time since week three during the 2005 season Friday against Lansing.
It was the second win in as many years for the Bobcats, who defeated the Trojans in the first round of the Class C playoffs last November.
Using a balanced passing and rushing offense, Lansing answered a 17-yard Greene TD pass from Nate Whittaker to Justin VanWert with 22 straight points.
Lansing quarterback Vincent Redmond scored on a four-yard run to put his club up 7-6 at halftime. Leading rusher Colden Knapp added to the lead with a seven-yard rush in the second, and Redmond hooked up with leading receiver Teagan Barresi on a 20-yard scoring strike making it a 22-6 game early in the fourth. Redmond had 169 yards throwing the ball on 10-of-15 attempts to move within 14 yards of 1,000 yards passing this season.
Greene closed the gap to one touchdown on Nate Whittaker’s four-yard TD run. The Trojans (4-3) were held to a season-low 183 yards of total offense, and need to win against Tioga this weekend to clinch the last of four Class C playoff spots.

Harpursville 20, UV-Edmeston 14 (3 OT)
HARPURSVILLE – The Storm won a five-overtime battle a year ago, but were unable to win this year’s marathon affair dropping a three-overtime final to Harpursville Saturday.
Victor Coronado scored his second TD of the game on a five-yard keeper giving the Hornets the final margin of victory. Coronado had a 12-yard scamper in the first overtime period to put his club on top, but the Hornets found few seams in the UV-Edmeston defense finishing with just 113 total yards of offense. “Our goal was to stop their running game, and with the exception of a couple times, we did,” said Storm coach Jack Loeffler. “The biggest thing is that we hurt ourselves. Between the twenties we were great, but we had mistakes that stalled drives.”
The biggest mistake was the only lost fumble of the game, and that occurred after Coronado’s go-ahead TD in overtime to end the contest.
Mason Wyman had two one-yard TD runs for UV-E, the latter in the first overtime that helped extend the contest. “We had won three of four games and the kids were feeling good about themselves,” Loeffler said. “This loss hurts...we came close.”
Jay Lloyd had 64 yards rushing and 30 yards receiving to spearhead the UV-E offense. Overall, the Storm outgained Harpursville, 201-113.

VERNON – Vernon-Verona-Sherrill made more with less to turn back Sherburne-Earlville Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils’ defense spent much more time on the field than their offense, largely due to S-E’s ball-control offense. Using the big play to score its points, Mike Jones hit had two TD runs, the first a 43-yarder on an option that made it 14-0 at halftime. “We wanted to take the ball right at them, and we did,” said S-E coach Mick James. “The statistics are deceptive because we really dominated the game. Big plays and an early turnover killed us.”
Sherburne-Earlville drove on its initial possession inside the V-V-S 15, but lost the ball on a fumble, its only turnover of the game.
Quarterback Logan Klockowski hit Phil Price on a pair of scoring tosses in the fourth quarter, the first for 12 yards and the second a long strike of 54 yards. The duo combined on four hookups for 87 yards. S-E senior Billy Northey had his sixth 100-yard day of the season finishing with 113 yards. “We made some mistakes, but we didn’t let the air come out of us this time,” James said. “This is probably the best game we’ve play all year, and the first time in two years I felt we got beat rather than lost.”
