Oxford girls capture first MAC team title

DELHI – Coming off a strong finish at the Section IV Class C-D championships last weekend, Oxford won the rubber match of its three-match series with Delhi for the overall Midstate Athletic Conference title.
The two schools split the regular season matchups, and a tiebreaker Tuesday afternoon was scheduled to determine the outright titlist.
The Blackhawks’ two Ericas – DeWispelaere and LaTourette – came away with decisive straight sets wins at first and second singles to set the tone. DeWispelaere, third in the Class C singles tournament, nearly blanked Carlene Bracci winning 6-0, 6-1. LaTourette was nearly as impressive winning 6-2, 6-0 over Emily Nelson.
Shelby Myers and Patty Anthony took first doubles in straight sets (6-4, 7-6), while Oxford’s second doubles duo of Olivia Powell and Danielle Backus won in three sets over Jackie Prindle and Justine Alwine.
The victory clinches the Blackhawks’ first MAC championship in tennis.

OWEGO – Greene ran its winning streak to 10 games, and can win a Section IV division championship with a victory over Maine-Endwell Thursday.
Holly Davis had two goals for the Trojans, who had eight different players figure in the scoring. “Our passing game is working great, and with our defense, if someone misses, another comes up with a big play,” said Greene coach Sue Carlin. “We talked about early in the season not making those crucial, little mistakes. We have not had those.”
Andrea Day, Anna Crumb, Andrea Myers and Stephanie Washburn had goals for the Trojans (13-2), who hosts the Spartans at 4:30 p.m.

Eva Rae Andrews had two of her three goals at the 33- and 27-minute marks, and Amanda Maxwell scored one minute after Andrews’ second goal to up the margin to three. “We dug ourselves a whole early, and you cannot get out of that against a good team like Delhi,” said Greene coach Randy Smith. “We had too many defensive breakdowns.”
Megan McDermott scored for Greene (11-7), her team-best 21st goal this season.

OXFORD – Oxford matched its five-win total of last year and had its first four-goal game of the season with a win under the lights at Oxford Tuesday.
Amanda Brown scored the first of her three goals at the 15-minute mark, and Katie Whaley followed that goal up just 39 seconds later getting an assist from Felicia Tynan. “We’re passing the ball in our short passing game a lot better,” said Oxford coach Kathleen Cragle, whose team scored 26 goals all of last season, and now has 30 this season. “We seem to be jelling more on offense.”
Oxford (5-13) plays Delhi Tuesday in the first round of sectional play.

Daniel Kraynak scored in the first half, and Nathan Steward added insurance with a pinpoint shot late in the game. “We came out strong and created a few scoring opportunities, but weren’t able to capitalize,” said S-E coach Mike Rodriguez. “We played very well late into the game when they finally put it away.”
The Marauders play at Canastota Friday.

WINDSOR – Norwich kept its bid for a winning season alive winning at Windsor Tuesday.
The Tornado won eight events led by multiple winners Makenzie Williams, Savanna Keator, and Rachel Lorenz. “The times are high, but that is expected at this time of the year,” said Norwich coach Amanda Downey, who noted the thousands of practice yards her swimmers have put in. “The taper starts in less than a week for sectionals, so hopefully they will see their times start to drop,” she said.
Norwich (5-6) will honor seniors Friday at home against Chenango Forks, and then wraps up its regular season Monday against Oneonta.

AFTON – Delhi won nine of 11 events to defeat Afton/B-G/Oxford in the Crimson Knights’ last dual meet of the season.
Amy Knapp won the 200 freestyle for A/B-G/Oxford, and Hannah Westfall captured the 100 breaststroke. Westfall finished just one-hundreth of a second off her own school record timing a 1:20.89. “We had some good races and were right behind them in second place,” said Knights coach Kevin Diefenbacher.
A/B-G/Oxford picked up an 88-78 meet win over Cooperstown last Friday and finished its MAC schedule at 4-4 (4-8 overall).
The Midstate Athletic Conference Championships are Friday at Delhi.
