Downed limb blocks Rt. 12 traffic, knocks out power Sunday

NORWICH – Traffic was backed up for hours Sunday afternoon after an apparent freak accident that caused a main transmission power line to fall across State Highway 12.
A tree limb has was identified as the main culprit of the accident by the Chenango County Fire Bureau. The fallen limb damaged and loosened a main transmission line which eventually fell to the ground, effectively blocking traffic along an eighth mile span of the corridor for over five hours.
The incident began at 10:17 a.m. and was cleaned up by 2:20 p.m., said Fire Coordinator Matt Beckwith. The scene happened just south of the Lower Ravine Road intersection. The collapsed line disrupted power in the immediate area, disabling traffic control devices and adding to the delay. Crews had to wait for NYSEG personnel to responded to the site to deactivate the live wire. The cable was so powerful that it melted parts of the pavement along the roadway and Department of Transportation crews had to make some repairs before traffic could resume.
No one was injured as a result of the incident.
