Marauders unable to maintain fast start

Evening Sun Report

Canastota 40, Sherburne-Earlville 23

WATERVILLE – Sherburne-Earlville returned the opening kickoff 95 yards, and it was all downhill from there, said S-E coach Mick James.
Canastota pulled away from a tight contest with three touchdowns in the third quarter to open a two-point lead to 15.
“We gave them some great field position with fumbles,” James said. “We were winning the line of scrimmage, but we kept giving them the ball back. When they had the ball, they mixed their offense nice with the run and pass.”
The Marauders finished with just 161 yards of total offense, but had the return game working. In addition to Billy Northey’s 95-yard TD return, Tyler Blinebry had kickoff returns of 74 and 50 yards, and the Marauders totaled 300 return yards for the game.
Four lost fumbles and 70 yards of penalties conspired against S-E’s offensive success. Northey scored on a 16-yard run in the third quarter, and junior Nate Kline had a four-yard TD plunge in the fourth.
S-E finishes 2-7.

Newfield 20, Oxford 16

OXFORD – Newfield spurned its wide-open attack with a more traditional ground game, and won a mud bowl over the Blackhawks Friday evening.
Normally a passing team, the Trojans established the ground game to take a 12-0 halftime lead. Mike Armstrong completed a 10-yard TD pass to Zach Stamp for the first score, and Marcus Kastenhuber made it a 12-0 halftime lead on a three-yard plunge.
“The field conditions were just awful and it was just a slop of mud the whole game,” said Oxford coach Mike Chrystie. “Newfield did a good job establishing the running game in the first half, and their line handled the conditions better than us.”
Oxford made a charge in the second half getting TD runs of 73 and 25 yard from Scott Shackelton, the latter closing the margin to four points.
Armstrong’s 37-yard quarterback keeper early in the fourth quarter put the game-winning points on the board. “The first half we struggle to establish anything,” Chrystie said. “We turned it around in the second half and got back in the game, we just kind of lost it at the end.”
Shackelton led Oxford with 167 yards rushing on 13 carries.

Sidney 35, B-G 6

BAINBRIDGE – Sidney played nothing like the 2-6 club that entered Friday’s finale in a blowout victory over the Bobcats.
The Warriors rushed for 300 yards receiving a team-high 126 yards and one score from senior Conor Hornbeck, and three TD rushes from senior Parker Curley.
B-G led early on Dustin Ross’ 30-yard TD run in the first quarter. Ross went down with an injury early in the second quarter, a development that surely hurt the Bobcats’ offense, but may not have made much difference over the final two quarters. “Sidney played a tough schedule, and they basically came in and handled our offensive and defensive lines,” said B-G coach Tim Mattingly. “We had no time to throw the ball and they put a lot of pressure on us offensively.”
Sidney broke open a 7-6 game with three TDs in the second quarter. Curley had two of his TD runs sandwiched around quarterback Dylan Umbra’s run.
Hornbeck completed the scoring on an 83-yard run in the fourth. “Sidney took its lumps against some good teams, but they were battle-tested,” Mattingly said. “Even though they lost some games, we knew they were a pretty good football team.”

Delhi 8, UV-Edmeston 6

DELHI – For the second time this season, UV-Edmeston was beaten in the final minute of play.
Devon Bedient scored on a two-yard TD run with 56 seconds remaining, and Bedient covered the three yards on the two-point conversion run for the margin of victory.
Earlier this season, Deposit scored the winning touchdown against the Storm with less than 30 seconds to play.
Eric Bennett had an one-yard TD run for the Storm in the first quarter, and that lead stood up until a UV-E fumble was recovered by Delhi at the 44 setting up a 56-yard scoring drive. “It was another hard-fought and heartbreaking game,” said UV-E coach Jack
It was the seventh time this season the Storm defense allowed less than 10 points during regulation play – three of those ending in losses. Two weeks ago, Harpursville won a double-overtime game over UV-E after regulation play ended in a 6-6 tie. Loeffler.
