The Georgetown Inn to open under new management
GEORGETOWN – The first inn opened in Georgetown in the early 1800s, and since then, an operational inn has been a part of the atmosphere of this small town, a part of which lies in the far northwestern corner of Chenango County. That, said new owner Nancy Strobel, is one of the reasons buying and running the Georgetown Inn was so important to her.
“This is an inn that has been continuously run since 1847. For it to stop being a function of this town, that’s just not right,” Nancy said.
As local residents for many years, Nancy and her husband Garth used to be frequent customers at the inn, but according to Nancy, irregular hours and declining quality made the couple stop going. Nancy said when she saw the ‘for sale’ sign, the idea of buying the inn quickly went from a thought to a reality.
Nancy explained that she and her husband took the time to renovate and clean up the business. The Strobels painted, insulated, bought new equipment and cleaned the restaurant from top to bottom.
“We want people to know that we’ve renovated and cleaned up the Georgetown Inn and made it into a family style restaurant,” Nancy said.
The Georgetown Inn officially opened on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Currently, the Inn is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. However, Nancy says hours will change in the near future when the restaurant receives their liquor license. “We’re hoping to have our liquor license by Thanksgiving at the latest. Then the bar will be open later,” Nancy said.
Under the new ownership, the Inn will feature daily lunch and dinner specials, and will also have breakfast specials on the weekends. The Strobels have also created an extensive kids’ menu, with smaller portioned adult entrees in addition to the usual kid foods, for children 12 and under. They also offer seniors portions at a 10 percent discount if requested.
A grand opening celebration will take place this weekend, beginning with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. on Friday. Rooms are currently available for the cost of $30 a night for a single or $35 for a double. The Strobels hope their locale will be inviting to hunters and snowmobilers.
The Strobels plan to continue with renovations and additions to the menu as they start business. They plan to offer pizza in the near future. “It will be a couple of weeks,” Nancy said. “We have the pizza oven in place, we just have to decide on a recipe for the crust.”
The Georgetown Inn is located at the corner of Route 26 and Route 80 in Georgetown. The Strobels invite anyone with old pictures of the building to bring them in. For more information call (315)837-4688.
