Class C Sectional Final
Candor 4, Oxford 1
ENDICOTT – A magical run through the Class C playoffs for underdog Oxford ended Saturday afternoon at Ty Cobb Field in Endicott as defending sectional champion Candor halted the Blackhawks’ bid for a first-ever section title.
Kristen Cleveland scored at 25:22 of the first half, the first of her two goals, and Cleveland set up goals for teammates Kendra Wagstaff and Stephanie Wright.
“We took it one game at a time through the tournament, and we’re happy with the outcome of the last two weeks,” said Oxford sixth-year coach Kathleen Cragle. “We’re disappointed with the final result, but we’re happy to accomplish what we did.”
It was an unlikely pairing of a team that had just two wins through its first 13 games, and a club that was the number one seed in the tournament and defending champions.
Candor was indeed able to move on once again, but it also gave up its first goal of the postseason to a pesky Blackhawks club. Freshman Haley Witchella scored her second goal of the playoffs tallying unassisted with three minutes to play. “This group of girls has set the bar higher, and we’re hoping this carries over to next year,” Cragle said. “We had a lot of support from the community, and we were glad to see a lot of red and black in the stands Saturday.”
Oxford finishes 8-13.

Martin wins Class C title for S-E
SYRACUSE – Samantha Martin backed up a third-place finish in the 100 freestyle with Sherburne-Earlville’s first swimming sectional title taking the 100-yard backstroke at the Section III, Class C sectionals this past weekend at Nottingham High School.
Martin won the backstroke with a 1:08.21, and her 58.11 in the 100 freestyle was her lowest in that event this season. Martin’s time was good enough to qualify her for the Class A-B-C races (top-24 overall swimmers), and the S-E 400-yard freestyle relay quartet also earned a trip to the A-B-C event. Martin and the relay team acquitted themselves well, said S-E head coach Corey DuBois among the top swimmers in the section. “The caliber of athlete against the Class A and B schools was up another level,” DuBois said. “I was really proud to have S-E present at the finals. ”

Norwich moves up a spot
OWEGO – Norwich improved its overall standing from seventh- to sixth-place at the Section IV, Class B team sectional competition this past weekend.
Savanna Keator, who was a state-qualifier last year, rung up a pair of second-places to lead the Tornado. She timed a season-best 25.83 in the 50 freestyle, and added a 55.47 in the 100 freestyle. Rachel Lorenz was third in the 100 backstroke (1:04.85) and fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:05.47), while Makenzie Williams swam a season-low 1:12:27 to wind up second in the 100-yard breaststroke.
Head coach Amanda Downey also noted significant time drops for Ellie Sacks in the 200 freestyle; Julia Simcoe in the 100 butterfly; Brooke Ireland in the 100 backstroke; and Hayley Chwazik-Gee in the 100 breaststroke.
“Despite the issues we had with our pool being down for five weeks this season, almost everyone dropped time from the beginning of the season,” Downey said. “Most of the girls were still able to obtain personal bests at sectionals.”
